Stargate discussion (split from Pyra size comparison thread)

^^^^How's Jack?
I'm worried about him. Yesterday the gate broke down. Jack says he can fix it and just needs a squirrel and a toothpick.
Since you're answering questions in-character...

How did the Tapwave Zodiac handhelds get into the Stargate franchise?  Was it brought in by the prop guys or did someone happen to have one on set and the producers went, 'Cool - we can use that!'

Your question isn't in universe.  More appropriate questions would be "How did the Tapwave Zodiac come used in so many roles within Stargate related projects?  Was it brought in by someone involved and found to fit these needs or did someone see it and decide that it had the capabilities required for these operations and interfacing with this equipment?"  Or something.

I can't remember what all it was used for right now.

Doesn't Jack have an entire military Command to run nowadays? how does he find time for poking at Ancient tech?

Also, do you think anyone from the Icarus base evacuees managed to bring anything like the Pandora or Pyra on board the Destiny?

I get the feeling it can get really intence on the other side of the universe, perhaps even to the point where someone might program Pacman (or some other game) into the ship's mainframe.

You are assuming the timeline was the same as when the episodes aired.  I know there were a few things along the way that dated certain episodes.  Do we know that we are at a time after that now?  Oh, oh! AND this could be a Daniel Jackson from an alternate universe or that has some sort of temporal displacement thing going on.  I can think of some other things.  Then again, sometimes hobbies keep you happy even if you really don't have too much time for them.

I miss the Stargate series - and FireFly.  Heck, I wish they would launch a new Star Trek TV series too.

There isn't really a proper science fiction series on TV anymore unless you count Dr. Who - but that is more sci-fi-horror.

I say it's a good idea to go from the last point in the timeline that we know of, as in from the last episode in the last series.. unless someone decides to release those canned movies.

Besides, if this Daniel Jackson is from a different time period, he will probably let us know (otherwise sorry about the spoilers man).

I also like to think that the SGC had been taking notes for probable travel between alternative universes, ever since Daniel discovered that weird mirror on P3R-233 and the Gate had all those wormhole fluctuations caused by solar flares. But that's just my impression of the SGC being a serious organization anyway, i could be wrong.

And wouldn't thinkering with the Gate be McKay's hobby rather than Jack's? and if to rephrase my question: the dude's a Lt. General in charge of an entire Command, what i meant was how exactly did he manage to escape his duties and find the time for his unusual hobby?

Dr. Who is more of a space opera than a SciFi series. Imo Stargate is a true SciFi, takes on the Doctor anyday. And it is quite a shame that there's no decent SciFi nowadays, but hey, at least we have the cool medieval fantasy.

p.s

I think we're about to hijack this thread, sorry about that ^_^ (perhaps a mod can please split the posts if he/she sees it neccesary?).

I also would appreciate someone splitting off the science fiction television series discussion.  Or we can just let it die after this post.

I fully agree, although I feel that Firefly was murdered.  Many others agree.  I will only accept a new Star Trek series if it is either based on the original continuity/universe, or it is well written and is of the comparable quality to that stuff.  None of that stuff related to the last 2 films. Several of the ST actors seem to be interested in working on a new series.  The one with Worf I heard about sounded pretty good.

I am a horror fan as well, and many science fiction and horror series touch on the other genre a bit.  I would love if someone created a decent quality television series heavily inspired by Lovecraft's work.

I have been watching the 12 Monkeys series, and I am finally getting over how they destroyed it and are basically just using the name and most basic ideas.  It is ok if you don't compare it to the film.  Helix is also ok.  I think there are probably some other at least ok science fiction series that are in their off season right now.

Night, officers in general, especially that high up, seem to have an awful lot of free time.  I would think he would have more time for fun after he was promoted.  It does depend on the position, but I still doubt he would work more than 50 or 60 hours a week.  I am sure there are many military personnel that dream of so much free time.

haha, great to see some fellow Stargate fans here! Did you guys know that Roland Emmerich is planning to reboot the franchise in the form of a movie trilogy (a restart from the beginning, completely ignoring the series!)

Excellent picture, thanks! The size differences are very clear now, exactly the kind of comparison I was looking for!
Ive heard of this new reboot. Might be ok. Stargate and stargate atlantis were great shows. I saw all of them.

I think i can keep going.

For any mods who are here, sorry again for hijacking this thread (^_ ^; ). Please do split our posts into a new thread at the off-topic section if possible.

I heard of the reboots a while ago, but if anyone happens to care for what i have to say about it, i would really appriciate it if they actually warped up the original stories first. As in have somewhat of a worthy end for SGU and perhaps actually make the planned last two fillms as a final for the entire franchise.

The last SG-1 movie had a really decent plot planned for it too from i heard.

I loved the original film and the book.  I know they tried to tie the series to the movie, but to me they still feel very different, and I don't feel that the way the ideas were presented carries directly over to the series.

Ahem...SGU...  (I loved it.)

I often feel this way, not just for Stargate related stuff.  I honestly can't even remember if I finished SG-1 (and I know I missed chunks of Stargate Atlantis).  I didn't want SG-1 to end so I may have stopped watching it so that there would still be new stuff for me to watch at some point.  I have done this with a few other shows.  It was only a few years ago that I finished up Star Trek DS9 and Voyager (I want to go back now and watch everything in chronological order according to the timeline...which can be problematic with episodes where they travel back before ENT.  I can't just go with the timeline placement of an episode within the series it officially belongs to, since I came up with the idea because of Trials and Tribble-ations, as well as TNG/DS9/VOY having crossovers and shared background stories, and I want to see if watching them "in order" with that mindset makes things seem different to me.).

I hate when there are cliffhangers, intentional or not, at the end of a series (I am glad they made Serenity, but there are still a bunch of loose ends.  Did B-4 ever step up and become more than how we last saw him, or maybe even "become" Data as seen in the future, or are we to merely accept that those timelines cease to have the potential to exist due to how the writers liked to try to tidy things up at the end of each episode?  Even within episodes with multiple timelines and time travel of sorts things did not make sense with how they are presented, however this can be easily explained away because they need to have a certain look due to being television series, and so as not to confuse viewers that don't get deep into the little elements like I do.).

Ok, this isn't working out how I planned.  I keep getting stuck on temporal things, which I am blaming on my choice to wear my Marty McFly/Optimus Prime mashup "Marty McPrime" t-shirt today.  My intended point is "they need to make more SG-1".

By the time I heard about Firefly it was already canceled.  The studio execs have to feel like complete fools canceling a show that had more viewers (DVD and streaming sales) after it was canceled than it ever did while they had it on their network.

FireFly has a pretty unrelenting, if unrealistic, fan base.  So much time has past that I can't see it ever getting going again with the original cast.  Frankly, and sadly, they're all too old for the roles they were cast in. Te same actors could get some recurring role characters in a new one.

To bring back FireFly would be to re-boot it with an all new cast - and follow the story line.  I could see the entire first season being the time during the war of independence ending in Serenity valley.  Follow each of the characters who would eventually become the crew of Serenity through the war timeline.  Include River's recruitment and eventual confinement and Simon's rise to success.  We know Jane didn't fight in the war, but where was he and what was he doing - we know he was up to no good (Janestown).  Clearly the Anara story line will require some -ahem- fleshing out.

The old cast could take on some of the recurring roles (as the bad guys).  Think Baldwin as Nishka.  Finnegan as Badger or as the regional Aliance captain who chases after them.  Glau could probably be cast as Inara - that would work.  You get the idea.

I can't see any broadcast network doing the material any justice.  There is a rich enough universe that it doesn't tidy up into 42 minute segments without feeling rushed.  Maybe do 10 episodes per season of 2 hours each?

It would be expensive to produce.  It would need JW onboard.  Netflix, Amazon, HBO or even Showtime could make it happen - if they could get the property rights - which would be expensive since this zombie show still brings in revenue from all of us buying DVDs, games, FireFly keychains, Jane hats, the comic series, etc..  Still, I think they would have an audience clamoring for it eight o' clock day one.

SGU was the best SG ever... Why did they cancel it? :( And why with a fucking cliffhanger? >.<

SGU was too much romance bullshit... but the story became quite good...

SGU I can see that it attempted to add a bit more dimension to the characters than previous Stargate series. The story I thought was much more engaging as the story had a greater sense of urgency of survival, even more so than Atlantis. I think the show was a direct response to the grimmer BattleStar Galactica series, the writers figured they couldn't keep the attention of audiences that were accustom to more serious material.

I really liked SGU, I felt they killed it before the show really took off.

I didn't liked SG:U that much, it was way to serious for my taste. I like SG:1 and SG:A for it's humorous ground tone and characters and SG:A was already awesome because of Rodney alone.  :D  The only funny SG:U episode was the one where Rodney McKay appeared, obviously.  Yes, SciFi has to include some fun too! *looking sharply to Battlestar Galactica*.

However, I also wished that SGU would have had some real conclusion. Why not making an Movie like they did for SG1? Same for SG:A, they didn't really finished the Series. Atlantis has landed on Earth, and then?

Firefly did it at least right with the solid Serenity Movie, great flick.  :)  I'm still waiting for something like that set in the Stargate TV Universe, also some conclusion for "Terminator SCC" and Visitors! Both ended with mean and evil cliffhangers.

Hey, does anyone remember what else this thing could be used for?

Logs, bash scripts, and ...?!? (Mumble mumble, sorry for spoilers...)

WORMHOLE X-TREME! The name of the show ...is WORMHOLE ...X-TREME! ...okay? ...NOT. Stargate.
How can this not be an in-universe discussion if we're having it right now?

Wait... "[...] what plane of reality are we on right now?"

@rygD, Well i think the timeline consistity you seek doesn't realy lay in the order in which you watch the episodes. I mean, each series was created with it's own agenda in mind. So if you ask me, i don't think stuff like time-travel or crossover episodes bring a worthwhile reason to stop watching and go watch that other spin-off which takes place closer to the events which the original series had just presented after the time-travel or crossover.

I mean think about it, in the later SG-1 during the Ori arc, there was this episode where Daniel and Vala traveled to Atlantis in order to dig in its archive for new information about Merlin. Now, in a sense in order to understand what Atlantis is, you need to watch SG:A. But if you're focused on an episdoe of SG-1 atm, just hearing the story in a nuthsell from a breif dialoge in some previous episode should be enough, since it doesn't really matter at that moment who the Wraith are as the focus is about the Ori.

In the same sense, in the first episodes of Atlantis,

the Ancient outpost at the antartic
shouldn't matter that much as the serie's agenda is focused on finding a way to access the Ancient city rather than focus on the events in SG-1 that lead to the events in SG:A, which is why, again, hearing about the the story in a nutshell from some breif dialog is enough.

There's more examples like the episode in SG-1 where they use a modified Puddle Jumber in order to travel to ancient Egypt or that episode where they stepped into an unstable whormhole that brought them back in time to the 70's and essentially into a timeline set before the original Movie.

Although, if you do want to understand the story better, i think the only times where you would need to consider timeline consitity is if a spin-off series started based on certian events that happened in the original series. As in Stargate's case where Atlantis started right after the events of SG-1 Season 7 and focused about the Ancinet city. Or where SGU (presumably) started sometime after Atlantis ended and focused on the Ancient ship Destiny.

I really liked SGU, I felt they killed it before the show really took off.
More like canned indefinitely, i always like to assume that the last episode of SGU was a good metaphore for what happened with Stargate in general.

Some weird circumstances named "SyFy" took the franshice and decided to put the entire thing in stasis, leaving some poor fellow (representing the fans) behind to wonder if it's indeed the bitter end or just a huge setback.

It's a real shame imo, SGU was just gaining enough momentum and becoming a nice blend of the good old Stargate fun and the more modern approaches to SciFi drama.
