This console all looks too good to be true, but I have a few questions please? It says you can play SNES and GENESIS :D games which is what interests me the most - but are they at all playable in a decent state, I understand the frame-rate is awful which puts me off a bit. <_<
Also, is it easy to use? I use emulaters on my PC, but i've never so much as burned a CD - d'you think i'd have any trouble using it, did anyone else have significant troubles?
Lastly, is there a GP64 or superior console coming soon? I don't wanna get burned ;)
And oh yeah, how does DOOM run? I'd appreciate any advice please and may order it as soon as tommorow afternoon.

Don't expect too much from Genesis or SNES.
A Genesis emulator isn't out yet (for the public), and the current SNES emulators are still slow (although SNES9x looks promising to reach a playable speed (with sound) in the next months.

Doom runs pretty good - fully playable with sound, smooth graphics, savestates, etc.

NES runs perfect, as well as SMS, Atari ST, Atari 800, and some more...
PCEngine (TurboGrafx) runs near perfect (full speed, although the sound sometimes sounds strange), C64 and GameBoy, too :)

Also looking good: Neo Geo Pocket :) Still an alpha release, but pretty fast without sound :)
Same thing is for Wonderswan :)

SNES games work pretty well, and there is no genisis(sp?) emu. There has been a joke genisis emu, but not public real one yet. But don't buy it only for SNES, its NOWHERE near perfect, and only 2-3 games that I've tried out of mabye 20 can run at a frameskip that looks like good enough to play, w/ sound, and another 3 out of that 20 can play good GFX w/o sound. Doom works well AFAIK, but I've never played the real thing, so I don't know exactly :) Bottom line: DON'T get it only for SNES, but get it, there are lots of cool game/other emus of unknown systems (well atleast to me, but I'm 11, so SNES used to be an unknows SYS to me :p)

Obviously my damn colour BLUE didnt work <_< , may as well tattoo newbie on my forehead - okay so they run shit but how do you play them with only four buttons?

I'm 14 is that strange?

The SNES emu isn't perfect yet... If you buy one now i'm pretty sure the're dozen of games that will keep you hooked until the next version of the snes emu is released.

4 buttons, well, technically it has 6 buttons (L, R, start, Select, A, B) and you can remap buttons using the emulator, A configuration I like is this. (depends on if a game uses a certain button alot or not) A=B. B=Y, select= A or X, depending on the game, L and R= L and R. Start= start.

It's kind of like how game companies can make SNES ports work on GBA =P

i think its impressive that an 11 year old is on this forum .. and can actually handle the gp32 .. the 11 year old kiddos i know are pretty ... stupid. they can't even even play on a game boy :p ok they can but handling roms .. ouch

I don't think people should judge the intelligence of kids by their ages. Well just give them a chance because theres always those geniuses that exceed the intelligence of the average adult and might serve use in this community. By the way, Im 14 also.

ehm .. i didnt want to offend anyone here. its not that i think hes an idiot because hes 11 i think hes pretty smart for his age. i just said that (maybe only german) 11 year old kids here at my place aren't even able to acces the i-net because they are stupid.

and being 11 or 14 is really good because normally you don't have the problems older ones have. i'm 17 and i wish i could be 11 again :)

I have a bigger problem, being 11, if my mom finds out the GP32 can do illegal stuff (even though I don't do it), she will kill me :p And since it might be released in europe, she'll find out sooner or later...

ehm .. i dont think its *that* illegal .. if u know what i mean. these consoles that can be emulated are already pretty old and i dont think that nintendo or atari expect that these consoles still bring them money... normally you buy stuff from these days at ebay so they dont profit at all. so you dont hurt anyone by emulating games :) and if u want to play movies on your gp32: thats also no problem if u posses these movies on dvd or vhs ;) and i dont think ur mom will kill u because its your mom YOUR MOM! she likes u after all :p

Snes emu is an okay speed, but the next version will be full speed. It is very easy to use. I think I heard that the GP64 was going to be released in 2007. Doom is perfect, expect for saves and a sfx bug. The next version will have this fixed.

Technically, Doom runs better than perfect! :D According to the site I got it from, it runs at 60 to 80 fps (higher than the screen can technically handle btw). That's a LOT more than my 486DX33 used to handle. Sure, it still has a couple of bugs (as mentioned - save and sound), but v9 should have this down.

Emulation is a grey area if you talk to the fans.

It's black and white if you talk to the publishers. If you don't own the C64 version of, say, Forgotten Worlds, you can't play the C64 version of Forgotten Worlds. However, who is receiving royalties from these games? Noone.

The authors of Elite are flattered that people are still playing their games nearly two decades after they wrote them. Ian Bell even has the game (in it's many guises) available for download. Rumour has it that they are (were) considering a GBA launch for Elite that resulted in the various Elite:TNK versions being pulled. Many game authors (I'm NOT talking about publishers, note) feel the same way, and are only too happy to turn a blind eye to abandonware sites (eg. Lemon and Underdogs).

When it comes to DivX and mp3, it's more of the same. You can record music onto tape so you can play it in the car, but only if you own the original.

The technical side of it is pretty easy. You have an Windows Explorer style window. At the top of the directory tree in the left pane is the GP's SMC. Drag and drop stuff into the relevant directories (renaming files as you go - GP can only handle 8.3 filenames [8 characters for the name and 3 for the extension]). Never switch off the GP as it's accessing the card.

If you want to view movies on it, you need to use Virtual Dub, and although it isn't rocket science, it is more complex than playing Xenon 2 through CaSTaway.

Another question please, im almost convinced, but will the SNES games save? And can you save state like snes9x on the pc? Thanks for the feedback so far, and 11 yr old are NOT idjits. ;)

All I want to do is play snes games on the go, it's a bit dull on PC - just the snes rpg's on a small console would be a very nice novelty. So they're slow, but is it reasonable? Can you play them alright though? - if you can sign me up i'm getting a damn GP32! :D

You can play NES rpg's until the next veriosn of snes9x is out. Snes9x features already save and i heard the slow down isn't that bad with rpg. I haven't tested it for myself because i haven't got my gp32 yet :(

Btw : what do you think about pokemon red/silver/trading cart game and some excelent NES rpg's until the next verison of snes9x is out?

Don't forget about the other notable features of the GP32 - built-in MP3 support (better then my portable CD player with headphones, especially since it can't skip) and GPCinema for DivX movies on-the-go.
