Here are some settings i find work well in Vdub 1.5.

I use this setting for movies of all sorts, ive been told 1.5 gives the bigest file output but still get movies over 2hrs like Matrix and The Mummy down to about 90Mb.

If you want to save some time setting these up make yourself a blank notepad file called whateveryoulike.vcf copy and paste the info below into it and then load it in Vdub by going to File>Load processing settings.

For movies use

Some additions to your settings:

Don't use Brightness/Contrast filter, cause it doesn't only brighten up the image, but you lose some of the image information in the brighter parts, too (e.g. a white dress loses all it's depth and is only clean white).

Instead use the levels filter to brighten up the dark areas without changing the bright areas :)

Ah well, I work as a CG Artist at a film- and commercials production company.
It's my job to know such stuff ;)

Maybe the loss of detail is whats giving me such low mb for my compressed movies?

I havent been able to tell a loss in qaulity on whites the only thing i notice is a slight washed out colour on blacks. Otherwise it works very well. Any one tried these settings with vdub 1.4? ive been told it yeilds much smaller movies? as im happy with the quality and if using 1.4 will save me 10mb+ then ill make the switch as 80mb for 2 hours of movie seems pretty good going.

Just changing the filter to levels shouldn't make MUCH difference in the size...
well, only, if you turn brightness up A LOT...

Just another tip:
If you have noisy material (noise in video, not audio), try smoothening it a bit.
It gets a bit more blurry (well, it is anyway on the LCD display), but as you have less noise you get better quality for the same filesize (or the same quality with smaller files. It's up to you :))

Hope I could help some a bit :)

Idea, why dont you just save files for the different settings so noobs dont have to mess with it. They can just load the settings and convert and be happy.

Because I only test-encoded some files and didn't save the settings.
But I know a bit about video and all that stuff, so I can help even without having encoded 100s of movies. :)

Another thing is: The Levels / Smoothen settings depend on the movie. If you have a good DVD rip, you won't need to smooth it.
If you have a divX from the internet, smoothing makes it better.
If you have a bright movie, you don't need to turn up the levels.
If you have a pretty dark movie, you have to raise the levels more than for normal movies.

So, these "settings" I provided are not real settings, just some addidtional filters to encode the movies a bit more perfect.
They can be used on every settings you can find to download :)

Ok, by request of someone, im putting my VD Cartoon settings here:
First download this from GP32 Emu.com
After its downloaded, run it and make sure every check box is checked in
(This will give you alot of cocecs!) And install them.
Now download my virtual Dub settings here
When you want to convert a video, open virtual dub, load a video, then push Ctrl and L at the same time and select
gp32-cartoon.vcf in the folder you saved it at, then push F7 to save the converted video.
