Well... The topic says it all really.
My mother has been playing a lot on Gameboy for years - but was really impressed by "that thing" i got and Stated that she wanted one too. So one day my father called me up and surgested that we could get her one for her upcomming birthday.... So I did (found a used one for a fair price).

It wasn't that much of hassle make it easier to use for "non-nerds". I just flashed it and have it start YALF up under PacROM, and then usage is pretty much self-explanatory...
I did however have to retain from using the catagories and just keep everything un-sorted. That way she can find it all.

She's quite happy since it can pretty much play all her old games through FGB. Only thing is that i'm really struggeling with learning her how to make the save to the SRAM :D . She mostly play SMB and tetris-like games on Little John.

I would really hope Rlyeh added support for his emulators to remember config, so you would'nt have to set frameskip and fullscreen everytime... She just can't learn that

Well... just thought it was funny and wanted to share it :)

Whenever my matesplay on my GP at 6th form they have to be reminded about frameskip and clock speed it really pisses me off.
so i know how u feel.

Wish I could convince my parents to by it. They always say, "The screen is too small!" on every handheld I show them.

Whatever. B)

am i the only one here with a loser mom!?

tetris, the only console game she will EVER play!

actually, thinking back when we got our first computer (when i was 6) my mom would play the game lode runner the legend returns (which she was pretty damn good at), and kings quest 7...

The last time my mom played games was when we she got our 286 computer..waay back when I was 3 or so. I know she played Pacman and Centipede a LOT, because when I was finally able to play the games myself, the HS table was nothing but her and her friend's names. After that, though, she pretty much never touched games again. When I got my NES, I tried to get her to play Super Mario Bros. and Tetris, but she was hopeless.

My daughter's dad plays GP32. Her mom plays every once in a while, too.

I would be "one of those parents"

I gave my son his first PSX when he was 2, and he played it 24/7. Now he has my GBC, GBA and a GC as well. All so he wont try and take my GP32!

He is 5 now and I am trying to work on his reading skills so he can play and enjoy more RPG's. Right now he just muddles his way through RPGs, and uses memorisation of what each command "does" on the screen. I am trying to hasten the day when my son can sit down and enjoy FF7 as much as I did.

Akuma, that is all pretty brilliant, cheers to you. It's a great strategy for parents hoping their kids approach reading with a positive attitude.

And Ringo, yeah it's been said, but your mom is awesome!

I'm 22, and may someday be a parent. But by then I'll have gotten over video games. Yeah, right.

my son is 1 so he only really looks at the cartoons/films i have on the gp...

that said, i reckon he'll get there - the little sod is a bugger for 'hiding' remote controls and tampering with the phone... so he seems to like his techie stuff...

his mum is queen of tetris and sonic - kicks my butt...

great idea teaching to read using rpgs ! that's gonna move him on a few years i reckon... definitely can't be a bad thing

mine dont play at all... but they think the GP32 is something because I can play listen MP3 or watch DivX... :D
am i the only one here with a loser mom!?
Nope but I dont think parents who dont play are loser...they maybe have something better to do :)
For exemple: mine is reading a lot...

see you

My mom tries to play the Super Mario games on the Snes with Super Mario all Stars. She can get past the first level or so. M dad plays fighting games and sometimes he beats me at fighting games because he presses all the buttons and he does not even know what he is pressing!

Funny so far no ones mum seems to play rpgs. My mum (who's been a grandparent for almost 10 years now) plays them a hell of a lot, she's completed almost every snes rpg you can name along with a lot of mega drive ones, a lot of pc ones, several psx ones and a few ps2 ones. She's an rpg nut and will usually get most rpg's as soon as they come out, playing them to completion. If theres no new ones to fill the gap she'll usually go back and replay one of the old snes ones. She's currently replaying secret of mana. :D

hmmm, i retract my loser mom statement ;) she does play asteroids on my mame machine sometimes...when it is running :D

my dad is a bit anti video games...which sux...he does play pacman...and asteroids...once he called an asteroid a "SLUT!" i laughed and laughed...it may have been a ufo tho...

Ah... I doesn't seem as rare as I thought. I'm 25 and my parents are around 60... well... my dad is over. I'm the youngest brother of two, so my parents have been grandparents for 11+ years too.

I don't think they would ever begin playing something as "advanced" as rpg's - it's mostly been simple arcade games or puzzle games they have been playing. I guess my mom's a fan of handheld because she can sit with it in front of the TV (guess that would make her multitasking).

BTW the reason she liked the GP32 over her gameboy was the big screen, light and colours :) The reason my dad liked it was free games

They have allways both been fans of Tetris, but my dad used to play Boulderdash and Giana Sisters back in the c64-days. Remember I grew tired of those two games back then, probably just because thay would cause my dad to sit in front of the c64 instead of me

Don't mind Giana Sisters today though... In fact I really love the remake.

EDIT:
I just thought I might sneak this in here since it's a bit related.
Doesn't the NES have SRAM? or is it just Little John that don't support it?
My mother began playing SMB3 on it. I played the first world through too, and it really don't seem to save at all at any point. You really don't seem to be able to continue any prior game.
I had to use savestates, and thats a bit hard to explain to my parent.

NES games have SRAM and LittleJohn supports it just fine. You have to go back to the menu and SRAM will save automatically, but wont save unless you do.

Also you should note, Super Mario 3 doesnt save (so it doesnt have SRAM), not on any emulator or even the real system! It was never designed to be a game that saves. So save states is the only way to save games like that! Its supposed to be a, sit down for 30-60 minutes and play to the end, kinda game.

On Topic:
Well my wife plays RPGs, and my son is her son, so she can be said to be a mom that loves RPGs. (She likes FF9, EarthBound, FFX, Legends of LEgia, Tales of Phantasia, etc...)

Video games taught my son many things at a very early age. Including reading, logical comprehension, and puzzle solving. As well as great hand and eye coordination. He enjoys games like Tetris, Metriod Prime, Bomberman, Castlevaina SOTN, SSX, Tony Hawk, Megaman (any of em), Soul Calibur 2, and Blues Clues! :p (and many more) He begs me constantly to let him play RPGs (because he sees me and his mother playing them and enjoying them) so I use this as motivation to get him to read. It also provides motivation for him to be good, he gets game rentals, we buy him games, etc..., or if hes not, he gets it taken away, etc...
