I just discovered a fascinating ROGUELIKE game for SNES: Mysterious Dungeon 2 - Shiren the Wanderer.

"This game, in the true hardcore Rogue/Nethack tradition, you only have the one save file and death means you lose ALL of your experience and items (except for those you managed to store away before your death), forced to start from scratch all over again. At the same time the game KNOWS you'll probably have to replay many of these levels upteen times and therefore manages to throw in new little tweaks/encounters/items you wouldn't have been able to see the first few times through."

A rave review/Podcast about it: http://www.roguelikeradio.com/2011/11/episode-13-mystery-dungeon-2-shiren_23.html?m=1

I got through to level 4 and got blinded by this girl who was coming-on to me. Well I happened to have a savestate, but obviously this frowned upon in roguelikes. Really nice game. Translated too. I managed to send a good sword back to town so the next character I play can start-out with it.

I'm a complete Mystery Dungeon fan. Imported almost all versions of the game... and played the heck out of them. I actually own 5 or 6 copies of the DS version and used to play with friends... the rescue codes are pretty fun and seeing who can race to beat the game first is entertaining. I've played the game enough I can generally beat the boss on a single playthrough on the DS version... the SNES version is a bit more hardcore and you'll have to rely on luck to make it through a single play through.

But yeah... beating the game is just scratching the surface, there's still tons of side quests to do, maxing out your NPC party character levels, a 100 level dungeon... it's a brilliant game you literally get out of it what you put into it.

I'll try and keep an eye on the thread and if you need pointers I'll try and give you a hand without spoiling anything.

You can sometimes see activity on the gamefaqs boards, and this is a great resource as well http://shiren.wetpaint.com and there's a fun "Let's Play" over here...

Good luck and happy wandering!

One amazingly cool feature about the quests is that to complete some of them you have to die and have the NEXT character continue where you left off! (the blindness girl)
