Yeah.  Hopefully, this article will make it clear to those who keep accusing ED for not going far enough to get other more powerful SoCs.  He did, it was just unfortunate that we're small fish in the sea that fisherman didn't want :)

People need to realise that it is basically dependant on them.


If half a million people buy the Pyra, there might be a chance that the next handheld by DragonBox will get a high end soc as it can be ordered in high numbers ;)

I don't think ED wants to sell millions of these. He's even told me that one of the reasons he doesn't like the idea of sourcing an x86 SoC is because demand could end up too high (don't think I actually agree with that concern though)

There's a big catch 22 anyway, so long as it's expensive and uses a more limited SoC the audience will be limited. But so long as the audience is limited there's no way to generate enough money to make a cheaper and more cutting edge device. Mind you, I think it'd be fairly niche even then.

That's not it ;) But for the Pyra, we need to do everything again. Case, PCB, etc. Who knows what small issues it'll have that needs repairs afterwards?

And could we keep up with a high amount?

Right now, I want to keep the company small and insure with smaller quantities that everything is fine.

If the new case is great, then we can easily create more PCBs that fit there or have minor things changed by the case company.

But if there's some issue, I rather have them with 1000 cases than 10,000.

We still try to prevent any issue upfront, of course :)

But I'm rather safe than sorry.

Auction the first batch of 100 Pyras.  One per bidder.  These should be a limited edition - special case color - numbered and signed - stated as BETA.  Highest bidder gets 001, etc...

Make it public that there would be at least a 3 month gap between the 100 and main release.

Let the first 100 known beta testers help hammer out the issues.

Give those 100 a certificate for one at-cost system board upgrade - just in case a board revision is required.

Those 100 would know what they're getting into a Beta testing program and would pay well to be included and may help cover the first limited production run costs.

Once the bugs are hammered out, continue to auction consoles until one sells at or under what you want as a retail price - then stabilized there and end the auction process.

Otherwise the first few consoles out will end up making someone other than you or the project a great return at auction.
 
100 limited PYRA at $1000 each!  Only the limited edition will be able to emulate PS2 and Gamecube/Wii and x86 games :)

And the limited edition should include a nude picture of the real human pyra (since the pyra will maybe have a camera, maybe the human pyra had one too :p ).
