Re-encode Your Movies For Gp2x

I have been testing some different bitrates with gp2x.

with (AutoGK, VirtualDubMod) DivX, 2-pass, 712x416:
Bitrates 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 all played well in gp2x.
For audio I used 2 channel CBR MP3 at 320 kbps.

Were only able to encode XviD (PocketDivX, 2-pass, 712x416) to ~1900 bitrate but played perfectly on gp2x.

Source video was a clip about 3 min long from Band of Brothers DVD. a artillery scene, so there was heavy action.

Overall the best quality was in the 3000, the change in 2500 was small but noticeable by eye. Alltought the file was around 100 mg.

Normally use 400-500 bitrate and 128 kbits VBR MP3 with XviD.
use 320*240. You wont gain anything from higher res.

How do you specify particular bitrates with AutoGK ?

Is it under Filters, and then add filter?

:D My pic made me smile!

Yes, it's kind of under filters:

There is a direct resize function, but there are a couple of ways to resize. It is usually much better if you use the high quality 2:1 reduction. If you want to crop, you MUST apply a filter; therefore if you want to do nothing with filters and just crop, use "null transform" and then press the cropping button.

Here is the command I use in mencoder---it is pretty similar to the suggestions in the first post.

mencoder INPU.VID -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts bitrate=300 -vf scale=320:-3 -lameopts abr:br=98 -o OUTPUT.VID

Ahh, yes, CLI is the way.

I wouldn't use any bitrate higher than 400 or so for the GP2X---you'll just waste the space on your SD card.

all sounds pretty complicated. I just use pocketdivx, click a few buttons and I create a 180mb full length movie that looks and plays great on "save" mode on my gp2x.

Can also queue up 10 movies and let them run overnight.

To help out, for those using the brilliant AutoGk, press CTRL + F9 for another options menu and choose ESS chipset, I found it gives superb results in Xvid using first class source mpegs. BTW choosing the other chipset I got tiled and jumpy results.

For easy encoding for those who can't be arsed there is Vemode, optimized for various handhelds including gp2x. :)

I use 400kbps and audio bitrate of 64 and get single episodes of Ca. 80 meg.

I usually encode my movies WAY down, I don't specify bitrate, but I compress half an hour into ~50mb. Even on my "big" copies that I save on my computer they're still only 100mb. Seriously once I sit back I hardly notice, even when I play 320*240 movies on a 19" screen. However they're mostly slow movies, plus the quality of the original recordings of most of the stuff isn't that good anyway (Blackadder, Python etc.).

I also use VEMoDe, it works pretty fast although adding videos to queue could be a bit less tedious.

Many of the apps listed appear to be Windows apps, makes since it is a windows world out there. So I thought I would share what I use on the mac and my Ubuntu box.
HandBrake rocks on the mac and if you don't mind the cli it works very well on Linux (have not tried the windows build)

I use xvid/mp3 in an avi container
320 width and auto set the hight
fps: auto
video vbr 300kbps
sound vbr 80kbps
and 2pass encoding

my file size came out to 123.4MB for a 43min show

(note I did not come up with the settings I jacked them from some one here and they worked well so I did not tweak them since I was not going to archive the video)

p.s. there is a GUI for Linux in the works but scripts work just fine for now.
p.p. HandBrake also works on BeOS if anyone cares.
