It was started before GPU940 existed, so I think not. Plus using GPU940 would require the source to be released, so its not commercial.

Thats a common misconception... there is no reason why a commercial game could not be GPLed. The media doesn't have to be free after all.

But you got a point with it beeing started before GPU940 reached a usable state.

I would love to see a high quality homebrew 3D game on the GP2X utilizing the GPU940 sometimes though. I would definitly help out with 3D models and textures.

There is a HUGE reason why commercial software avoids GPL. Because when released, I would just ask for the source and compile it myself.

Still, the industry is fairly competitive, so giving the competition total access to their technology isn't something most studios would. Still the GPL is fair enough, since most of the tools/libs/devkits under that license are free to begin with, and gaining money based on other's free work is something you just don't do.

Will this bring back the old GPL vs BSD license ...
I do have to say that GPL licenses are more appealing since it makes everybody share the knowledge.
But in my opinion it would be most use full to the scene if commercial developers could use the gpu940 in their binaries, though the idea of releasing the source code without the textures is interesting, but I have no clue what it would imply.

Looks like a great game though, reminds me of wipeout !

Yeah, it'd be like Doom. Even though the source code has been released, you are still expected to buy the game to acquire the .wad files. Obviously there would be no obligation for him to give up the models/maps that comprise the game even if he released the source.

But surely DRM would be a whole lot more difficult with GPL?

RapidRacoon is a commercial game. with our own code: game and 3D engine (no port, no code re-use) and our own materials:3D models, texture, music....
Then no GPL or code release.

Ukko/Live!
