If it's any help, you can with Q2, so I think you could get it with q3.

thats good to know, the other thing ive found is that quake wants a cd key, from what ive read it seems you dont get the key with the steam version. Im holding off for now.

I bought it on Steam a while ago, an yes, you can get to the pak files. They're at..

:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake 3 arena\baseq3\
