[POLL] TV-out cable questions.

Cable length

As a Pandora owner, I think it goes without saying I don't like settling for second best. If paying more means the cable can do more I'd prefer that.

I only voted real short, because I like the idea of it being more of a short dongle allowing people to plug in their own cables than some longer cable. It will allow the user to have some freedom in length of regular AV cables.

Plus a short AV dongle is easier to carry around, perhaps even cheaper to manufacture.

I'm with TrashyMG on this.  I'd much rather have a small portable breakout box with female connectors than a long cable with male connectors.

It may be an idea  to add connector type to the poll...

Perhaps I should have said connector gender, male or female.

The TV Out cable was advertised as having male connectors on the end.   On a long cable this makes sense, as you plug the cable directly into your selected device.

My preferred style would be short with female connectors, to be used in conjunction with standard AV cables, which are normally male on both ends.

Can't add more questions to the poll.

Well, my pico-project has a female cinch, my tv too...

Yes,  and so do the devices you would normally connect to them. (DVD players etc)  Basically my interest is to mimic the interface you'd find on a regular player.

EDIT: I should probably add that the cable I'm envisioning wouldn't be longer than 10 cm

I want it all, and I want it with a long cable (2-3 m). If I go somewhere else with a short adapter-dongle, I'd still need a long cable to plug in there.

I just hope the thick and heavy cable doesn't put too much stress on the small plug ...

I wanted all of them so I made cables with male ends that are 12 foot and 6 foot and then I built a 6 inch cable with female ends.  I put svideo and composite on all of them as well as line out.  I am going to make a new 6 inch one with line in as well.

So what is the hold up on this? I am not a hardware builder, so I do not understand why these have not been made and sent out? Anyhow, I would like a cable of at least 10 feet and have as many in and out ports  as there can be. I think that covers it......

Most companies that create cables like this have minimum orders of at least 10,000 or so.. getting someone that could do smaller batches are hard to find.

I like the idea of shorter cables.  This is why I use an external controller, and leave the Pandora sitting next to the TV/monitor.  With a short cable, it is more portable.  If you need a longer cable, add whatever length additional you may need, but don't force the rest of us to carry around additional meters of cable, it increases cost and bulk.

The holdup is that the companies that have been contacted to make these cables for Pandora...have wanted an absurdly high minimum order, like 100,000.

What about giving people an OPTION??

Or how about making connectors that would fit the Pandora, and then accept standard AV Cables?

Have a connector into the Pandora, that has a male plug...and a female end you can plug standard AV Cables into...then people could simply choose their own size...even change sizes depending on what is wanted?

Me, personally, I want a LOOOOONG cable, because, when gaming, I do not want to jerk on the cords, and cause the Pandora to fall from where I have it. So, if there's enough slack, this is not a problem.

At this stage we'd be lucky just to get A cable, splitting production runs into more variants is probably out of the question at this point.

That'd be the 'break out board' option others have asked for which would be acceptable to many, going by previous discussions over the years on this subject (and possibly even more desirable). When you think of the number of lines and connections a fully featured cable would have to accomodate, it could be a pretty hefty piece of wire - both to carry around (when you look at the thing it belongs to) AND to have hanging off that little connector on the back of the unit.

It could be though - holding the pandora with even only a couple of feet of slack hanging off that connector with a cable carrying audio in and out lines, composite and S-Video lines and possibly more... that's tempting fate!

Probably much safer to use a joypad and keyboard via a hub. Bit of a Spaghetti junction.

If a smaller cable reduces costs (both production and shipping) then actually getting one might then be a realistic prospect.

For me personally, the smaller the better - I'd like to carry one for use on devices I would have right next to the Pandora, extension cables are standard and widely available for peanuts.

You could always make the cable a decent length and if that is not long enough for some them they can buy couplers and increase the length themselves.  Problem solved......PLEASE MAKE CABLES!  I will buy one when I buy my Pandora!  Dang it ASUS Tablet why you not selling so well...??!!!!!  I need my Pandora money!
