A pc world opened in my town about 18 months ago and the other day I was talking to some one I know but havent seen for a few years.
Turns out he works in my local pc world as one of their "expert staff" so I started asking him about a recent pc problem i've had and he told me he didn't have a clue as he'd only had two weeks training on starting the job!!!
Before that he'd been a barman. He also told me that the reason they always have to dissapear in the back to "find out for you sir/madam" was to check a flow chart of possible advice and which products to sell you!

yea, well thats because anyone with even the slightest knowledge of pcs would:
1) never buy anything from pc world,
2) apply for a decent job and definetly not even consider working in pc world :S

Hmmm - I'd think about waht you say here - you might offend someone...!

Hehe - seriously though - I worked in PC World, as one of the technicians. My time there was as boring and stressful as hell, and I finally left to go on to better things. However, there are a few things to note about what you have said...

1. The technicians at PC world SHOULD generally be reasonably knowledgeable. It's up to the manager at the relevant store to get people in who are up to the job. Luckily, we had a good manager who knew who he was looking for (both of us were much more than adequate for filling the role).

2. The wages they pay a technician in PC World are absolute pants. For the knowledge I required, I should have been on at least 5000 more a year. Thus, in most cases, when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

3. PC World technicians have NO training as such before they start the job - no technical training anyway. Basically, most of the pre-job training is about selling - both their "PC healthchecks" and everything else.

When we had unanswerable problems, which was unusual between the two of us, we did actually have a large number of other branches with competant technicians to call up, so to say they're all useless is not true. Unfortunately, you rarely here people praising, as it is against human nature to do so. Agreed, most of the sales people in PC World don't know their arse from their elbow, but keep it in mind that their are an extremely large number of products on sale there, and many people expect the poor old sales lot to know every detail about every product.

Lastly, the 'Dont buy anything from PC World' thing is also not necassarily good advice. They do, on the odd occasion, have cracking deals, and their PCs are now of extremely good build quality (not always so in the past), unlike simlar machines from Tiny and Time (now 'The Computer Shop' - which makes me laugh!). PC world only make around 2% on most PCs, so the idea that their PC are expensive is, in all honesty, a load of rubbish. It's the add-ons that make it expensive (pronters, scanners inks etc etc), not the base unit itself. For anyone who wants to buy one, it's worth going down to your local branch and seeing what they have in the way of base-unit only offers - you may be suprised.

Sorry - I'm not pro-PC world, but I've seen it from both sides of the fence.

Cheers :)

Fair enough, sorry if I offended anyone, I've just had a lot of bad experiences with stuff from PC World. They might have improved since, I dont know... All the PC I've seen brought from there look a good deal on the outside but then when you look at what your actually buying its not that good - Normally with minimal room from upgrading, a friend brought a pc from there with 256mb ram and when he got round to upgrading it he found they had filled up all the four slots with 64mb ram sticks!!!!

I bought about £50 of computer peripherals from a branch of PC World - Took it all to the till and was told that they didnt have any carrier bags. As we were quite far from town (and had to walk) I was a bit pissed off!

'excuse me mr pc world man, i'd like to buy a 200-quid graphics card from you. i've done my homework and am 99% sure it's compatible, but if it isn't, can I fetch it back and get something else?'

'No.'

'BYE BYE!'

I got a 20 Packard Bell DVD-R's for £14 in cases not sleeves :D... They arent that bad my PC World Branch :D... Cheaper than Staples In my opinion (Most of the time :D)

I have a bit of a thing going with our PC World in Hove- bought a £60 CDRW drive about 2 years ago and caned it to death burning loads, when it started to fail I took it back a day before the warranty ran out and they honoured it so I got the latest £60 worth of CDRW, now, a year on, it's happening again so I'm on my way back to do it again!!- might get a DVD writer for a few quid more!

In my neck of the woods, we have CompUSA as our local computer "superstore". I think they're almost out of buisness, as the neighborhood gets increasingly older and the younger kids just order everything online. The markup is something like 70%!

ive never been to pc world, alway go to currys or order off the internet, i think theres a pc world about 80miles from where i live.

I pretty much buy everything online myself. Stores are a waste of time unless you need something there and then. Otherwise it's more intelligent to searching the internet for deals. So far my new computer has cost me about 65 bucks for the case and the motherboard. I'm in the market for a new WD 160GB or < hard drive. Been searching pricewatch and they seem to go for around 100USD or more. That's a slight hole in the wallet, but it's better than going to BestBuy and buying one for like 150 or more.

pc world know fuck all about computers which is surprising since that is what they sell. I had a problem with my computer freezing constantly and after months of phone calls, 4 "engineers" and numerous hard drive replacements they finally changed the graphics card and it worked. nice one pc world.......... <_<
