Is this thing neat or what? It's going to be fully free software, which means that it'll bend and twist to the most bizarre needs and support the operating system I like. At first I of course laughed, but after reading the faq and looking at the support list, it's beginning to grow on me. Currently I use a logitech mx518 and I use all of the buttons (well not the dpi changers) and I think I could learn to know how to use more buttons.

I would have to use it to really know if I wanted it. I don't know if my fingers can really distinguish between all those buttons, especially my middle finger. Also, it's corded isn't it? I think on /. they linked to a picture of it with it's cord. I can't go back to a cord, ever.

Yeah, it corded, for me that's no problem, I generally don't carry my mouse around. As for the learning curve, sure I'm guessing that there is some, but I've learned emacs and generally muscle memory is a brilliant way to do things, much better then 'vgrep'. I'm guessing my current choice of KDE4 will be supported soon enough, and maybe Eric-ide as well, or if not, I am sure that emacs support will be there soon. (moved from emacs to try this ide and DE thing properly)

Man that's a mouse, it would take a little getting used too and choosing what function to what button.

Mighty mouse wankers :)

If you have a Magic Mouse and I have an OOMouse and we compete in any FPS, RTS, MMO, or OpenOffice.org Calc-off, you are going to be utterly obliterated. OBLITERATED. It won’t even be close. So, if you want sleek and superficial style, by all means, go ahead and buy a Magic Mouse. We don’t mind. But if you want raw power, flexibility, and speed, speed, speed, you will do much better with an OOMouse .

Why not get a keyboard, and add an optical sensor underneath it. To move the mouse pointer you simply slide the keyboard round the desk :D

I saw that somewhere actually, I should look for it on youtube.

I think it will be too hard to train your fingers where the buttons are. If this wasn't the case then it would have been done a long time ago. A website had a story on patents pertaining to pointing devices, can't remember where, but this has been thought of in so many ways before. People just can't make use of more than 4 buttons on a mouse effectively. If this works out I'll be surprised.

I think Apples Magic Mouse concept is more likely to become the standard than this. Besides, Logitech and Microsoft have been working on a multi touch mouse for a while now, that is where the market is heading, not a million button mouse.

Edit: Sorry klikklak, not trying to take away credit to finding this, but I couldn't quote it without it looking like it was your opinion.

Yeah, you guys/gals might be right. But then again, emacs has lasted for twenty something years and firefox is moving in that direction with ubiquity. I'm just saying that the one with the lowest learning curve (while undoubtedly popular) is not always the most efficient way of doing things. And I've seen pictures of mice like this from the early nineties, these things existed. Apparently CAD -workers use pretty complex interface devices as well.

I want to point out that I don't think I would like it. You might be different and find it really useful. I would try it if it was a cheaper mouse, or an ok priced mouse that was wireless, but I think it will cost quite a bit and of course it will have a cord.

If it has the potential to work well for a lot of people I hope it makes it, I just don't want to be one of the people that tries it out.

Yeah, to each his/her own. I like to look for new ways of using computers, they might not work, but they're interesting. If I was made of money I'd buy one of the more strange ergonomic keyboards for sure. But they cost hundreds of dollars typically, so I'll have to be happy with a regular ergonomic. 75 bucks isn't that bad if you get a toy that might keep on giving and in the worst case gives joy for a few days of learning it.

It's too bad that this has the crap patented out of it, now no one will buy it because Apple likes to do things them selves, Microsoft users will be too confused if it replaced Windows, and Linux just doesn't have the money.

If this ever sees the light of day then who ever owns the Patents will have to make their own OS, which is no small task. They'll end up making a modified Linux or BSD and this will bring about the wrath of Microsoft, they'll make obscure patents that really have nothing to do with this '10 Finger Multitouch User Interface' but no one survives legal battles with Microsoft unless it is an open standard. Also the wrath of the open source community will be seen because it's not an open standard. In the end Apple will just do something that blows your mind killing it in it's tracks and make you wonder why you ever wasted time looking at that youtube video.

Software Patents kill innovation, but Apple finds a way. I don't know which I dislike more, Apple or Software Patents.
