Hi Guys,

I've just go my 2x and I thought I'd do a quick port of Nuvie. (A new engine for Ultima 6) I was surprised at how easy it was to port to the GP2x. It seemed like I spent most of my time setting up my build environment.

You can move the avatar around with the joystick but that's about it at the moment. I might bind some actions to the other buttons like get, use, drop. I will need to work on a text entry system for the conversations.

I can put up some binaries if anyone is interested in having a look.

I should really focus on finishing Nuvie before doing any serious work on a GP2x port though. :D

Hi TechFreak,

I can let you know how I set my system up but that might not be too much help to you as I'm developing on a Mac. :)

From NUVIE site:

"Nuvie, pronounced 'New-Vee' is an open sourced game engine for playing Origin's games Ultima 6, Martian Dreams and Savage Empire..."

Even Martian Dreams and Savage Empire !!!

I'm fainting again...

If you're looking for a text entry idea, you might want to take your cue from Frodo. In that, if you press the L button it brings up a virtual keyboard. Press L again and it goes away. Seems like an all right control scheme to me.

Before anyone gets too excited about this, it should be pointed out that Nuvie isn't as advanced as Exult... there are a lot of important things that aren't implemented yet (like combat) which make the games un-completable. Check the Nuvie home page for more information. Still, it's nice to see more stuff being ported to the GP2X, and more exposure for Nuvie is always a good thing (Ultima 6 is still one of my favorites of the series).

I'm surprised no one has ported XU4 yet... seems like it would be a fairly easy port aside from the need for text input. Perhaps someone should make a text-input library so authors don't have to reimplement an on-screen keyboard for every project......

Hello Guys,

Actually I have a suggestion for soft keyboard... If you ever played Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 you may have noticed how usefull that soft keyboard was. Same lay out can work very well on GP2X. If i could set my DevKit up and running i'll developed a soft keyboard like that one and other devs can use it.
