The news are coming in from various credible news sources that Nokia is indeed moving to WP7 as its main platform. Meego will go on but as a minor platform.

How much I hate Elop right now.

That sucks if that is true. I would have gone for a Nokia for my next phone but now I am not sure. Meego is a really cool idea I think, they should just stick with that and concentrate on making it as good as possible.

They knew they had to do something, obviously they chose MS over Google.

Still... I can't see anyone stopping the Google and Apple train now, not even Nokia.

That's a good point, does anyone on this forum use anything other than Google?

Would anyone who bought one of those phones not instantly switch the search url to google?

It is a horrible treat to watch Microsoft struggle like this.

Hell, they'd probably lock the default search engine on their phones to Bing like Verizon did with one of their newer Android phones. They might still be doing it, in fact.

I think they're really not 'getting' what they've got with Meego, alas .. stupid management, really. Like a relationship with Microsoft is going to be of any use. Game Over, Nokia .. you're like the Sun Microsystems of cell phones ..

^^ Better yet, they'll say it like it's a usability perk. Usability through limited features has been a bad trend lately. "Don't say that the user CAN'T change the search engine, say that he DOESN'T HAVE TO!" or something like that. IMO firefox is doing it right with the about:config page and a simplified preferences dialog. Multilayered configuration FTW.

EDIT: added ^, because ninjas are about

Sigh...

since they are putting WP7 on high-end phones that really fragments their product line because of apps. QT isn't going to be supported on WP7 and it certainty can't run on low-mid range devices...

With the MeeGo path they could have gone MeeGo high-end, Symbian low/mid-end and then started phasing MeeGo to the lower end phones all using the same app base.

Now they can still do the same model, but have to maintain 2 sets of applications.

On another note, this might actually be good for the pandora, at least on the short term. The linux folk are going to want a mobile platform to work on and as Meego is being put on the back burner (remains in development, but not in front line) those people could turn this way for their mobile open source needs. Might. Could. May. It's a possibility, not anything certain. Of course this also gives growth to the proprietary sector, which is of course bad. Just musing the possible effects of this move.

This sucks big time. I have an N900 and its a fantastic phone. Meego is looking really nice and now they kill it before its even there...

Microsoft need to concentrate on the areas that they already lead in, rather than trying to start a loosing battle with google. When your competitor's product name has become a verb; you really should step away from the table.

Windows mobile is definitely going to kill nokia dead. They were already starting to lag behind when their last few 'killer' phones turned out to be botty water, so the smart thing would have been to come up with a really good android line. Windows is about as sexy as your grandad's dirty underpants, windows mobile doubly so.

But it's going to bring the brand names I love like Bing!

I think Nokia have misread the trend here, they were on the money with increased openness, they just didn't have the balls to see it out to profitability. Guess I'll have to see what HTC cook up next. I couldn't be more disappointed about, lets face it, no N9.
