seems gp have sent a new kernel @ 320*240, which alledgedly runs gnuboy and mplayer, squidge (check irc log) will continue the story when he tests it ;)

I'm off to bed.

Well, here's a small rundown...

Power up, crash, power cycle, crash, power cycle, crash, for about 30 times, then it actually booted.

First flash - nand_write_page: Failed write, page 0x0000065f, 557056 bytes written: ERROR

Not to worry as this things got uboot, and second time succesful.

Nice "Gp2X" screen on bootup, but no Tux. Me want to see Tux! :)

/dev/dsp now exists! mplayer will now play an mp3 file, and I can actually hear it through the headphone socket. Didn't last for long though, as the program crashed after about 30 seconds :o

Tried to play a few videos, but mplayer complained "gap size too big".

gnuboy I can't get to work at all. Just a blank screen, same as before. Even with the rom provided by GPH themselves. Just talking to an engineer about this now.

Heh.. Great stuff. However, looks like GPH has outsourced everything -- like debugging their system <_<

How is this diffrent to there last console ;). Well Squidge, that's some marked progress but I guess some way to go. At least they HAVE a kernel that supports the hardware, I was starting to worry ;).

Hacking is going quite nicely too. Don't want to say much more at the moment just in case it all falls apart, and then I'll look like a right tit :)

Anna from GPH got back to me and said that Gnuboy works for them, but an engineer will look into it, but she doesn't know when. Also, Apparently, more bits of hardware are being built, and the boards we have at the moment are not final, but no idea of when anything new will actually be sent out.

Must say though, whilst playing around in Linux, it's nice to be able to send debugging stuff out by just printf'ing to stdout.

Just a pity these boards take about 20 - 30 power cycles to actually get going (seemingly getting worse, as I'm sure it was only about 5 attempts at the beginning). Once they are are going however, they seem rock stable.

Hmmm, actually, pulling down the processors reset pin to ground causes the same amount of retries, so doesn't look like a power up issue. Possibly faulty u-boot code not configuring the processor correctly, so the amount of retries is completely random?

GPH sent me another new kernel (newer than craig's), and it crashed whilst booting it. Second time lucky though, still doesn't work with Gnuboy, mplayer still crashes. Kernel still says 32mb ram, and still has mouse support, image capture support, etc, which are not implemented on the board, so pointless using the up memory for them. Maybe I'll get another tomorrow.

I think it'll be easier in the end to just build our own - at least we can improve on it then (optimize, shrink, etc).

Right, need to do some "proper" work (as in, payed) before I get sacked...
