It's kind of like those, Junker. The one thing I will say is that the post-2002 shoot-em-up releases on the Dreamcast have been full of unusual gimmicks. While Ikaruga is a fantastic game, it felt more like a puzzler than a shoot-em-up to me.
Trizeal is just old fashioned addictive shooting, building up that score, grabbing powerups to turn yourself into a powerhouse. Thus, I would go as far as to say i'm enjoying this more than I enjoyed Ikaruga, purely for it's addictiveness and simplicity. (Flameproof suit ON.)

Also, in response to Bast's comment above about there being no particular places where one weapon is better than another. I beg to differ. There are PLENTY of points.
For instance: The beginning of the first stage, where the ships come in through the top corner of the screen - Blue laser will catch them immediately, and because of it being just a straight forward firing beam, you'll very, very easily chain the powerups together, the enemies dropping a LOT of the 1000 point drops, as they just fall straight ontop of you.
For the rest of the first stage, use the wide shot. I say this because if you get it powered up to the maximum 5 powerups, it makes the 'Break out!' bit a hell of a lot easier. (You may or may not know this, but if you destroy ALL the big ships during the Break Out! phase, you get a 10,000 point drop, and an additional wave of enemies before the boss. My record, including this additional wave, is around 420,000 at the end of the first level, which I can't get if I power up any of the other weapons.)
