New device suggestion - Simple music player

design wise i still dig the iriver u10 and s10 models.

sitting there in its retro style docking station... so sexy.

Well.. between getting BT speakers to work... and just plugging in the speaker jack... Docking also recharges.

I don't know if it was already proposed, but I was thinking about this for a while, because I like the quality of the Pandora audio, but I'm unable to use it when I'm running/snowboarding, so...

Here how can be a Portable Music Player I can blindly buy if it was produced:

- Small, starting with a maximum 4x6 cm

- Display:

               Option 1:

                - Simple LCD 2 color display (with backlight), with like 2 or 4 row of text, just to be able to read long names or paths

                - Physical buttons

               Option 2:

                - Touch screen (capacitive) with the lower resolution possible, just to be able to show the icons to press, and show some lines of text

- A physical volume control, exaclty like the one on the pandora, maybe smaller

- A small NAND just for the firmware (maybe open source)

- SD (or micro-SD) slot for the songs (and for firmware reflash, just in case)

- mini usb for charging/connecting with the PC (that has to be able to see both the NAND and the SD)

- Bluetooth (for wireless stereo hearphones and for connecting to the pc or car stereo)

- MWeston working on it

Optional if there is space:

GPS, or accellerometer or, you know, the things that can be useful when you run, to make statistics

What do you think about this ?
I do not need Bluetooth, but the rest is exactly what I search for years now.

There does not seem to be any good tiny music player with SD-Slot out there.

I do not even need FLAC-support, vbr-mp3 would suffice, ogg would be nice,

but it has to read full sized SDXC.

The ones that I found were utter crap and played the songs always in the order they were copied onto the card.

The Cowon D2 family (D2, D2+, D20) are:

1) Well established

2) Not utter Cr@p

3) Capable of reading full-size SDHC cards (maybe SDXC too?)

4) Somewhat bigger that the above specifications :(

That might be your best bet if no heroic hardware manufacture wants to step up.

So, seems like no one wants BT connectivity
right! totally forgot about that.
i got awesome sennheiser bt headphones. audio quality is crisp! with exchangeable batteries that last for 6+ hours theres no reason to ever use wired headphones again. i am an audiophile and im telling you: with the right set of headphones bt doesnt make a difference in terms of quality. but its a huge convenience. they sure were expensive (~ 160€ ish iirc), but i use them every day and they are worth every penny.

Not available in my area.

I always thought it would be neat to have a RockBox Car stereo.

That would also be an idea :D
Thats exactly what I have. I just lack the integration at the moment ;)

Reason being simple:

I used to have my Android hooked to my in-car-stereo.

Once I made the mistake to use the Pandora. This was mind-blowing and completely spoiled Android, iPhone and any other device I tried for me. So now my Pandora is sentenced to a lonely but noisy life on my dashboard most of the day.

If anyone helps me a bit softwarewise, I would be a lot more motivated to finish this project I am gnawing on since many years. Last time unfortunately noone seemed really interested.
