Yunnow, it's great that someone came up with a lowpower alternative to backlights, but am I the only one that hates them. I know currently there is a lack of alternatives, so they are the best balance for today's systems, but they totally wash the image out.

I remember playing my Lynx and Gamegear, and although they had a battery life of about 2.5 hours, the screens were beautiful. I also have a Casio PocketPC, and that has a wonderful backlit screen, and the battery lasts a good 6-7 hours.

What I'm trying to say really is that I wish people spent more time trying to invent better batteries, like the ones in PDAs (Or even better) because it's about time we had a decent backlit TFT (or equivelent) but with the kind of battery life we've come to expect from our handhelds.

I really hope Sony is reading this :)

Sorry for my rant. I needed to get that out.

Congrats on the mod.

One thing (maybe two) i would like to know, Have you any pics of you doing the transplant. If so, Would you be prepared to write a guide on how to install one of these babies. I could host it if you like.

One more thing, What is the long light (thing) above the GP32`s screen and what is it for.

EDIT: Here are some smaller versions of the pics.

thanks trooper , u da man.

a few notes on this:
the light guide i have on it in the pictures is scratched up and looks like shit, the one i am using right now is MUCH clearer!

i am going to replace the flourescent bulb with 2 REALLY bright leds, once i get them (just HAD to live where electronic parts are hard to come by  )

the reason i send him the gi-freaking-gantic pics is so that ppl could tell that i wasn't bulls***ing ;)

if anyone could point me in the direction of some really cheap white leds that are either 3mm or smaller (smaller=better) that are really bright, that would be awsome.

these light guides are sooooo cool :D

now for some info on those...
it appears that the part that reflects light onto the lcd is just a VERY thin film like stuff, i had some of the light guides sitting in rubbing alcohol to clean em and the film started coming off  , and where it came off it wouldn't light anymore..hmmmm.... wierd stuff man..

once againg special thanks go to trooper for hosting the pics

as far as a guide, MAYBE, it isn't something you really want to get into, its a pain in the ass to find these lcds, and it was sheer luck that if found em, and i am glad i did

the thing above the gp32 (the copper looking thing?) is the flourescent bulb, that goes around it to reflect more light into the guide

EDIT, this isn't finished yet ;) i have more plans for it...

also, isn't my black gp32 awsome? spray paint rocks.

I think it's awesome you are exploring light mods for the GP32, but truth be told, I'm pretty happy with my current FLU. That is, with the exception of one discrepancy: the light switch on the back of my unit turns to "off" with just the slightest jiggle. I gave a presentation the first month in my Art History class using the GP32 as a pass-around-the-class slideshow viewer (of Egyptian tombs and such), and nobody could see a damn thing on the screen in the dark room after someone accidentally touched it. How annoying, but the presentation went great.

Anyway, what really impresses me is the spray-paint job. I totally believed it was a rare black console.

thanks for the compliment on teh paint job! it is pretty cool, the reason it was painted was becasue of a botched dye job, it looked like crap, literally, it was brownish

and i'm not looking for a new way to light it, i am looking for a way for veteran gp32 users to have a lighted system ;) also, if anyone finds these lcd's cheap somewhere, then tell me! the model no, is:

ACX704AKM

if anyone finds these cheap somewhere online maybe i could make a guide for it. the lcds are also used in compaq ipaq 3600 and 3700 models, not sure of anything else tho.

its a 3.8" lcd, so the light is a little big and needs to be sanded down a lot... i used a disk sander, worked REALLY well..The light in the pics is unmodified other than being taked out of the lcd, the "new" one fits in between the lcd and protective glass much like an afterburner, and has no scratches, the one above has several.
the reason i used a scratched one was so i could save the perfect one for the final "product".

If anyone is looking to do this mod i would suggest making ABSOLUTELY sure that the lcd you are using is:
1. big enough
2. front lit

a backlight cannot be used as the gp32's lcd has a reflective layer that CANNOT be removed, doing so would totally kill the lcd.

thanks, nerd of nerds, not nerd or the nerds like trooper said...

spraypaint... yeah you can do some nice mods with a good old can of spraypaint. I modded my xbox and controllers with the stuff. But doesnt the paint come off? It sure as hell did on like all my controllers. O well crappy paint beats crappy die!

i want to make one thing ABSOLUTELY SURE: THIS ISN'T FINISHED! i am going to to be putting everything inside the gp32, no external components at all!
