Neo-geo

I know you can get the afterburner for the color version of the neo geo pocket on Mashmods premoded for 120 USD+ shipping or you can get them modded for 50USD, maybe they will mod the non-colors like on GBAX as well. I think Lik-Sang sells games.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC) is worth the price, especially now that the games are dirt cheap. The homebrew games aren't quite what the GP32's are, but the real games are 100 times better.

My recommendations are:
RPG - Faselei!
RPG/Card - Card Fighters Clash
Platform - Sonic The Hedgehog (or Metal Slug 2)
Puzzle - Magical Drop (I haven't actually played this on an NGPC, though)
Sports - Neo Turf Masters
Fighting - Like half of the games released for the NGPC are fighting games, and you shouldn't be dissapointed with any of them

Anyway, if it were me, I wouldn't bother with the B&W version. Pay the extra little bit and get the Color. I don't think there's a good frontlight for it, but you can get a worm light if you need something. The screen is way better than any other handheld I've seen, though.

OK:) i ordered it already.. i dont exacly expect it 2 be like my gp32 lol. Will colour games work on my monochrome version?

Lik-sang seem to be all sold out... guess ill hav 2 look on ebay. Keep a look out 2 see if colour games work on monochrome version 4 me :D

I have a ngpc, its very nice. Only its not lit, so I can hardly play when there isn't enough light.
I should get a light or something for it.

Also the npc doens't use so much batteries, the batteries that I have now are the same I put in when I received it. Its a mirracle, or it uses almost no battery power.

I also thought of getting a second ngpc, so I could link-up and play against someone.

The batteries last much longer than the GP32, but no way near the same length of time as the Wonderswan. That's got something crazy like 20 odd hours worth of play time on ONE battery! Insane.

The NGPC is the better console for English speaking gamers, though. If you can pick yourself up a colour unit (the b&w version can't play some of the best games like SNK vs Capcom and Metal Slug 2) you'll be doing yourself a great favour. IMHO this is the best commercial handheld ever produced. The graphics may be more Gameboy than GP32, but the sheer quality of the software available makes you indefferent to all shortcomings. And the design of the unit itself is almost flawless, with a responsive joystick and a very effective unlit screen that saves on those precious batteries. At the cheapo prices these things sell for today, you'd be a fool not to snap one up.

or you'd be really cheap :p

btw, there's also a console called Neo*Geo, it's one of the coolest consoles out there i think (because of the KOF-series)
the NeoGeoPocketColor just was an attempt of SNK to get into the handheld-scene (a success i think, but gb was overhelming)

Hi there,

I'm a total newbie here I'm afraid. Just found out about the GP32 about a week ago! But now I really want one!

I intend to buy in October because I should be getting a pay rise then and owe myself a present.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the idea of getting one. Emulation, mp3 players and homebrew games seem to make this system better than any other mainstream handheld system.

However, I currently own a NGPC, which I was very happy with until recently. I just got bored of all the games I had because I completed them all, but the system itself is fantastic (I can vouch for the battery life thing).

My concern is that a lot of people here seem to be companring the NGPC favourably to the GP32. I would have thought when I finaly get round to buying a GP32 BLU that I would be getting a much better system than the NGPC!

What is it that makes the NGPC superior? Battery life? Choice of games? Build quality?

Your responses will be very much appreciated and I look forward to becoming a member of the community when I can afford it (and if you'll have me!)

Battery life: absolutely, but that's not a real problem if you get good rechargable batteries, my FLU lasts about 10 hours with 2300mAh batteries.

Choice of games: again absolutely if you only count commercial games. Commercial games for the GP32 are crap IMO, there are too few and the quality is too low. But the number of games you can play on your GP32 is huge thanks to emulation and there are some very nice homegrown games available.

Build quality: IMO the NGPC beats the GP32. The pad is better and the screen is fitted into the handheld in a better way. The GP32 does feel good in your hands and the buttons are good, pad is okay too (just not as good as the one on the NGPC). The screen is fantastic, it's big and after playing a GP32 with a light you can't play the NGPC anymore. Only thing I really dislike about the GP32 is the way they 'mounted' the screen. It's just not smart to have a screen that is 'sunken into' the console. If your NGPC is dusty you just wipe it, with the GP32 it's much harder to get rid of the dust.

The GP32 is just better because it can do more. You have more control, can play MP3's and movies, read books and watch pictures, and thanks to emulation you can play games forever.

Hi there!

I've only recently bought a GP32 myself and I was also concerned that I might be buying a lesser machine for more money. The NGPC is superior in that it has a MUCH better software line-up. Besides one or two decent titles, the GP32's commercial software is supposedly well below par (I've only tried two titles myself, but it's obvious that the NGPC has the better games). If you're buying a GP32 for the games, forget it! You'd be better off with a mobile phone :(

But where the GP32 really excells is the homebrew scene. You've got a decent choice of emulators, software and original games and ports all freely available for download. The emulators alone offer a huuuuge cataolgue of games arguably superior to any other handheld available. The PC Engine, NES, Master System, MSX and Atari ST emulators all work great, but don't go expecting full speed SNES and Mega Drive emulation just yet (they work fine with some games, but not all). Couple this with the MP3 player, video playback, a screen twice the size of the GBAs and up to 128Mb to store all your software and you've got a great little handheld.

It's hard to compare the GP32 to the NGPC because they're such different consoles. The NGPC is plug and play simplicity, while the GP32 demands a lot more effort on the part of its user, but can offer greater rewards in the end.

If push came to shove, which would I take with me on a desert island? The GP32. With the emulators and homebrew software it just offers a huge catalogue of games that the NGPC could only dream of. Plus I'd have movies and music to offer some variety.

That's assuming I have a PC with an internet connection, of course :p

Hope this helps clear things up for you. Please feel free to ask more questions though!

Oh yeah, I'd agree with this. But personally, I find the non-FLU works great. The screen is much larger and clearer than the GBA and you should be able to play it indoors with a regular overhead light no problem. I also like the sunken screen - it helps avoid the scratches that plagued the NGPC.

Oh, and the GP32 has a joystick so you should feel right at home :)

Huxley? You from the Neo-Geo forums?

Anyway, I have to agree that the GP32 is the better machine for deserted island planning. :)

Unless you have a NGPC flash cart, you only get one game per cart. Compare that to the GP32 where you can have MANY games on a single SMC. Also, the GP32's SMC holds more data and it's physically smaller.

I really like the NGPC, but there's no way that I'd say it's better than the GP32. Sure, there are things about it that are better than the GP32, but as a whole, the GP32 is better.

The NGPC wins huge in the area of commercial games, both because of the price and the quality. Really, it all comes down to the fact that you could get an NGPC with some awesome games for cheap enough to make it well worth it.

The GP32 wins because it's just a better machine, with better support. It's newer, and its processor and screen are just plain better. The support is better, because all of us here at GP32x support the GP32 better than SNK supports the NGPC. :)
