Well, theres the PSP(Playstation Portable) Sony is boasting that it will be able to store 2 hours of DVD quality video
scheduled to come out in 2004.
http://pocket.ign.com/articles/421/421134p1.html

"May 28, 2003 - As part of Sony's most recent financial presentation, SCE head Ken Kutaragi offered up a few new hints on what we can expect from the Play Station Portable, due for release in late 2004. Specifically, Kutaragi mentioned that the system's new UMD optical disk format will be capable of storing a two hour movie at DVD quality thanks to the power of advancing compression technology. In LP mode, this can become up to four hours."

"It's becoming clear that with PSP Sony is interested in something that goes a bit further than a games machine, and even further than a portable MP3 player. Stay tuned for more details as we learn it."

Has me questioning my GP32 purchase

Well....this seems like it'll rival the GP32 in terms of movie capabilities, but will developers be able to create emulators for it?(legally or illegally, either way)

Who knows about most of it (emulators/homebrew development), but wouldn't you rather enjoy the next year and a half with a GP32? During the interim you can play your GP32 and save up to buy a PSP when it comes out, nothing better than having it all!

PSP looks so bomb! But ill still play my gp32 while i have a PSP. PSP kiks ass but GP32 has the emus and everything. It wont kill the gp32 since its only in korea and UK later this year plaus it has pretty good support from us import/hardcore gamer types. So dont be afraid of gp32 going down from P2P comin out. Plus i think M$ will probly come out with a handheld sooner or later theyll do anything to beat sony. I dont know y but i think sonys falling from the game business. dont ask me y its just a feeling.

great and all but id like to see solid proof of such formats existing, sony is being way too vague and its not for publicity purposes

I'm affraid this psp, may end up being underspec compared to the initial idea. It will probably only use memory stick (they have plenty of them to flog), and i wouldnt like a thing spinning in my hand. (depends if it spin like a hard drive only on access) and for the homebrew seen, dont think that will happen, if you want to make games for it, we should impress some publishers with our gp32 coding skills, one or two of us could get employed.

And talking about cpu's have you heard of the new 64bit xscale processor designed to be arms competition, maybe gp64 should use that!!!

I got the GP32 so I could:

a) play portable retro gaming through use of emulation
B) play portable homegrown games
c) use it instead of using my keyboard etc for emulation on my PC (bit of an expensive joypad but still ;))

Well they say its gonna be released by late 2004 and by then you should be expecting devices like that coming onto the market. Anyway the release date will probably fall back as they always seem to, they'll either be released in Japan or America first then onto Europe and by then it will prob be mid 2005. That means we'll have another 2 years of the GP32 at least.
Even when the Sony thing is released its gonna cost a bomb and will only gradually become more widspread say by end of 2005 to 2006 so its definetly no immediate threat to the GP32!

I think this is probably all just hot air from sony. <_<

Sony is an entertainment company, If the do plan to release the PSP and it does support movie playback. Sony will obviously do something to protect their money making movie arm and put some protection in the PSP to stop it playing pirate movies.

Two hour movies on a handheld is not someting new. The GP32 can do it now, As we all already know. I know it`s not dvd quality, But it good enough considering.

There are no pictures of the unit yet AFAIK, Just think, It could end up being the size of a video cassette (remember them :p ) or even bigger, Hardly pocket sized.

Just abit of speculation. :D

I bet it isn't even of the drawing board yet. They just leek this info to get the PS2 owning potential GameBoy buyers to go "oooo... i think ill hang on for the sony one" just to buy them self time as the GBA is saturating the handheld market at the mo'.

Jus a guess of course I could be very wrong

As for protection, anyone know how to create those optical discs this thing will supposedly use? If they can be burned on a normal CDRW drive then fine, otherwise that's your protection right there.

I'm betting that what Sony WANTS to do is release a new optical disk format alternative to DVD and release other players (or make their DVD players compatible with it) all at the same time. Complete guess however :)

I am sure the PSP would probably be cool when it comes out (end of 2004 if we follow Sony schedule, which is still atleast more than 1 year ahead). But it depend what you want to do with your handheld, if you are interested in the homebrew development then the GP32 is the way to go. Dont expect Sony to welcome indy developer and let them make any software they want. It will be like Nintendo you will need to be approved to be able to make some software. (i know they are some underground dev. with the help of flash cart and the link, but it is far from being supported from the big console maker, while Gamepark embrace it and encourage it).

Just because companies don't welcome homebrew development doesnt mean it wont happen, just look at the Dreamcast, the Xbox or even the playstation.Homebrew games and emulation were all done on that system without the support of the company....isn't Gameboy Advance the same way?? Either way, I'm guess liek with all the systems someone will figure out a way to dev for it.

There are pictures of teh Sony PSX. Im guessing this is what you are meaning. If not, then WTF is the PSP?

There are messages here under one of the boards (cant remember wich one! Sorry. Its a tiny forum so won't take long to find.

The optical disks are called "MiniDisks", and look like small floppy disks. They've been out since at least 98, and are primarily used for music. It's a proprietary format, and it's difficult to find a Minidisk player that has direct computer connections.

The PSP will not use minidisks... minidisks cannot store 1.8GB of data. THey can store a few hours of music but it´s compressed. It has less space then an ordinary cd.

Personally I won't be getting a psp as I refuse to pay over £15 for a video game. I am getting a gp32 because it is open source. Open source is the future, mark my words. hoh yes.

it is hard to judge the size of those discs fromthat picture, they look like they are as big as a 3.5inch floppy...I hope not
