`tis a sad day. GP32news is reporting that the MAME port has been put on hold.

Thank jeebus we have the 2600 port to hold us for now.

I so very much hope it's true and a Genesis emulator will soon be available. The second I see it entered into the contest I'll donate the 50 Euros I promised. I just can't wait to play Streets of Rage II and all on my GP32.

But won't the Genesis emu be as slow as the Snes one ?

Meaning really it will be a waste of time ?

At least the Mame Emu would play a few games at full speed. Also, did I read that games like In the Hunt were playable ? These are quite graphically impressive games !

I don't wish to sound negative (I would love to play Genesis Games as much as anyone else) but why not finish the Mame Emu first ?

All the Emu's for the GP32 are never finished properly, and this is a big reason I think many people decide not to buy a GP32.

Anyway, enough with being negative. Good Luck with the emu ! Playing Sonic on the GP32 would be fantastic ! (the game gear Sonic doesn't count !).

You know how it is, you work on one project and when you get bored or hit a brick wall, you switch to another one for a while. I'd love to see both the MAME and the Genesis emulators!

Also, for those who weren't "there" during the big boom of emulation on the PC ... let me tell you, there were many NES and SNES emulators that ran slower than what we are seeing now. Many of the emulators ran so slow you couldn't even tell they were moving. They got better, and better, and soon they had full speed ones (they weren't just faster because PCs were getting faster, the code was getting better).

What I'm trying to say is, don't judge the Genesis emu until you see it. And also, remember that most of these emulators say BETA in the name, as in, they're still a work in progress.

Flack

Both are good, so whichever happens to come out first it will be a bonus in my opinion. Just keep the support going for the deveolopers - we should support them as much as we can. I, for one, are very appreciative oif all the work they do.

Keep going! and good luck!

Cheers

bah. people are so fickle. "we want a genesis emulator, we want a genesis emulator!" Then a mame port starts up - then the guy decides to chill out a bit and work on genesis emulator "we want a mame emulator, we want a mame emulator!!"

hey, whatever, as long as SOMETHING gets released then that's pretty floppin' cool, no matter what it is!! And for me, Genesis and Mame are #1 and #2 on my list of "non-emulated on GP32" wants anyway...

keep 'em coming!

(everybody else - stop whining! If they got that far with a mame port, just be happy some work's being done, and be patient and supportive. Look at it this way,at least the guy's taking time off in lieu of ANOTHER emu for our beloved system, rather then just picking his nose or someting -- )

genesis isnt as powerful as the snes i think
Not exactly:

The Genesis has a faster CPU than the SNES, but much less in the way of graphics and sound "helper" chips. If anything, this should mean that a Genesis Emulator will be easier to get running at a decent speed than a SNES emulator.

Granted, I'm not an Emulator writer myself, so if someone wants to correct me be my guest.

I do seem to recall genesis emulators (Genecyst) being closer to perfection much faster than SNES emulators (SNES9x, ZSNES) on the PC side of things.

IMO Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles beats Super Mario World down in terms of graphics. Sure, they didn't have the 'helper' chips, but they were never used in SMW except for cheesy effects (the bosses compressing and expanding ...). Sonic had parallax, and it looked damn good.

Basically the Genesis can run games that play as fast and look just as good as SNES games.

I just hope one of these ports sees the light of day and becomes something playable at a decent speed rather than hot air on a web page. :p

here here
to compare a first generation snes game(SMW) to one of the last mega drive efforts(sonic 3) doesn't seem right,
if you compare like with like i think the snes was (is) a better machine but the mega drive did have a lot of quality games, like world cup italia '90. :p
ooops.

heres hoping that all the emulators get released. B)

The later SNES games look much better than any Genesis game, Donkey Kong Country pisses on Sonic.
But IMHO Sonic pisses on Donkey Kong in terms of playability and cult factor.
DKC was a nice game though, and the graphics were probably revolutionary
for the time.

For my part, I didn't like the graphics style of the later Sonic games... Dunno,
they tried to make the level backgrounds more detailed and stuff, but the
whole look became so... fuzzy. I liked the blocky style of Sonic1 more, with
these nice checkered hills and more cartoony but less post-apocalyptic
scenery.

1995, when Sonic and Knuckles was released, the Megadrive was already
at the end of it's life cycle, and the SNES was beating it hands down.
Just compare (graphics wise) S&K to Yoshi's Island which was released the
same year and you get the picture.

...Except I hated Yoshi's Island.

The reason I compare SMW to Sonic 3 is because those are the types of games I play on the respective consoles, I haven't played many of the later SNES games.

I've just realised, there's little point arguing about which console pisses on which, you have emulation for both and you can play both of them :p

Yoshi's island looked great, but I agree it wasn't too good.

I just never liked Sonic, you push right jump occasionally... DKC is my favourite platformer ever, closely followed by Super Mario World of course!

I used to play world cup italia '90 on my mates ST, you may be able to play it on two emulators one day! :)
