just saw the Nokia N900 today, and was wondering if there was a possibility of Maemo 5 running on the Pandora? The hardware specs seem extremely similar.... and that OS is fucking badass.

Yeah, it'll probably run.
It's just a different-looking Linux-based OS that runs on similar hardware.

What's so badass about it?

It does have Flash 9.4.

Yeah, I was thinking about the Flash part. Seeing as it also has a Cortex-A8 and has GLES acceleration, it looks like we might get lucky and have a drag-n-drop, possibly even hw accelerated Flash plugin.

Hi guys,

I was just wondering the same thing coincidentally- well because I was watching youtube vids of the N900. But I'm not so sure it will be able to work on the Pandora, is it even open source? I know it is linux based and runs tons of open source based stuff- and I know there is a whole SDK for it etc- but where is the source repository for Maemo 5? I can't seem to find it...

Took 1 Google search. "Maemo sources". First link.

I really doubt it. After all, it looks like parts of maemo that make it so desireable are going to be proprietary.
Mer, on the other hand will run ok if someone will port it.

But do you really need another ubuntu variant?

Yes but notice that those repos are labeled Tools and SDK. That suggests to me that these are for building applications for Maemo not Maemo itself. Someone inform me otherwise?

Maybe, but that page has all of the sources available. In any case, I wonder if a vanilla build of Maemo 5 might just work anyway because of the fact that the hardware is so similar. We can always hope, right?

- That was really informative actually. One of those slides states "100% OSS is not the goal here. 80/20 is blah blah" .
So maybe that 20 is like the GPS map software and things like this? Perhaps the OS itself is completely open...

Yeah, it looks like it's mostly open, except for a few proprietary, special applications which you're getting when you pay for the N900. I thought the OS was mainly open, as there had been discussions about porting Maemo over 12+ months ago.

I thought the interface was hands down one of the best handheld interfaces I've ever seen. And the applications it runs are very tweaked and streamlines for handhelds.

It looks great imho.

The answer is no. Unless it's Mer. In that case, yes. Mer is wicked, I have it on my SmartQ 5 and even if it's just a test version it works really well and it's perfect for mobile devices. If we get Mer, we don't need Maemo 5. Or any other ubuntu variant.

I know what I'll be putting on an SD card when the Pandora arrives at least. The interface looks cool ok, and access to the Ubuntu repos + Launchpad is bliss, but I'll probably install something more stable and/or efficient after I've played around for a while.

Huh, this post made me curious about Mer. After reading a bit, it seems like Mer is being integrated into Ubuntu MID. (source) Well, more like sharing so much base code that they'll be essentially the same, plus or minus some preinstalled packages and branding. If I'm wrong and someone more knowledgeable comes by, please correct me :)

I'm not really sure about the details, but there is a libflashplayer.so (I think it is called) file on my N810, which is presumably ARM compiled flash.
What exactly is the file, and would it be possible to use it on any similar ARM based system?

I should really learn how compiled systems work, instead of using Python all the time...
