Short story: I went to a computer camp in 1981 and got to log-on to a mainframe using 512x512 graphic+touchscreen terminals. The system was called PLATO. It started in the 1960s. Yes. 1960s and 1970s had online realtime graphics terminals, with multiplayer games, email, bulletin boards and live chat (talkomatic)
Oh and control data spent upwards of 900 MILLION dollars on PLATO in 70s-80s dollars..
