I'm not hugely knowledgeable about the genre myself, but I do enjoy the classics. Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, etc. I have to be in the right mood to listen to jazz, otherwise I have a tough time paying attention to it and good jazz demands attention.
There's a lot of instrumental jazz that are great!
Perhaps you should give us an exemple of what you like because Jazz is a really wide music.
It goes from rag, "classical" jazz, US westcoast style, bigband jazz, freejazz, acid jazz etc...
Freejazz could be hardcore. Search for some Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Joe Harriott, Archie Shepp, John Coltrane materials for exemple.
Frejazz is also oftenly associated with improvisation jazz.
Acid jazz is a more modern dancing style: The brand new heavies are well known for that.
