How can it be bricked? I only turned it on for the first time this morning!

I would recharge the batteries and try again, you can't overcharge them, but the coloured lines are also associated with low batteries as well as bricked units. If you didn't get the firmware updating screen that people see when their GP2X fails, then I'll assume it is a power issue. Check the battery contacts for any excess white coating that may be causing resistance. You can scrape it off if it's present although it will be removed naturally after changing the batteries several times.

Good luck. ;)

P.S. I have had the coloured lines when switching it on with a good set of batteries and simply switching off and then on after a sceond or two has seen it boot successfully, there is hope yet.

NiMH batteries sometimes need to recharged few times to function properly. Try other pair if you can to test it. Symptoms what you are describing are quite normal when power is passing out. If this would not help then you have probably failed unit.

You have still the batteries included in the box? Try them - they are crap but good enough to check if gp2x works.

I had this problem too, powered my Unit on when I first got it with my Nimh, and I got the vertical bars. Then I threw in the junk batteries that you get with the unit, and all was well. This thing is more picky with batteries than with SD cards.

Cheers!

Thanks all,

I have used 2 sets of ansmanns, a apir of panasonic disposables, some 1300 uniroos and the cheap ones and all i get is the lines!!!

Its dead!

Before you give up:
How good/old is your charger?
Also it couldn't hurt to try rubbing the battery contacts in the unit for a while with a clean rubber eraser (or scrape them with a knife.) I thought mine were fine at first, but one day I tried it anyway and it looked like some crap might have been coming off with the eraser. While you're at it you may as well clean the contacts on the charger and batteries, too.
Just saying it may be worth trying before sending the gp2x back.

my gp2x is bricked too, i unluckily got the "Firmware Updating" screen, as soon as i saw it my heart sank, im very pissed with it. Seriousy ruined my xmas :(

Edit: typos

Anyone notice how much hes preaching about how it was bricked when it came? Sounds like someone tried to flash version 1.1.0 . Im sorry if it really came bricked but craig tests his units....

Yup, but if he got the "Firmware updating" screen, the 2X clearly worked when he received it, but toasted itself due to not liking the make/model or whatever of the sd/mmc that was inserted when it was turned on by the new owner.

Unfortunately, it seems quite common for 2X's to flash themselves with empty data on some configurations of sd/mmc cards.

I'd put the sd/mmc card that caused the brick somewhere safe where it can't be used again...

Speaking of SD my dad broke my reader and one of my gp32 SMC's and my 256mb SD which were in it!

There are screws on the reader right? If so, go get a screw driver. If not get a chisel.

I sure hope this whole bricking thing stops soon. The only way it should update is if I run something in utility. This auto updating has had only bad things.

Well I assumed that you meant they are stuck in it. I must be wrong.

How did your dad "break" it and why was having your cards in the reader bad?
