Hi all,
I have been lurking these forums and the GP32 scene as a whole for quite some time now. It must be at least eight or nine months now. But, I have finally managed to scrape up the money to buy one of these, and, if all goes correctly, the system will be in my hands tomorrow.
A question I have, though, is about playing movies correctly on our little handheld. I have read the F.A.Q. and downloaded all the necessary software, but one thing I would really like seems to not be available anymore. In your F.A.Q. (which has been a great help this entire time) it states that you can rip movies and the like right off the DVD. "Finally you can convert straight from DVD to GP32 movie." it says. But the link to any instructions is broken.
Can anyone help me here? I would like to do this very very much, as I have some great shows, cartoons, and animes that are just begging to be played on this system!

Thank you so much in advance, even if you can't help!

Oh, and before I forget, how can I play GBA games on my GP32? I can't seem to find a slot in any of the pictures...

I kid, of course.

Well to play GBA games you buy this GBA modder thingy and than stick your gba cartridges in. Instant GBA :p

Good to see another member B)

i allso have that problem but with snes carts... THEESE DAMN CARTRIDGES WONT FIT :)

now t be serious, for ripping the vobs from dvd i use "smartripper" (just type in in google), than you can convert the vob (set smartripper to single file output) with "virtualdub mod" http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubmod/ to a avi.
I use the newest xvid build by koepi http://www.roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtml
if that codec dont work for you get the one from joygp

that gives better results than evry "all in one solution"

ps: its nice that you informd yourself, evry good newbe should do that.

I am one of those individuals that cant help you with this (all my movies are donloaded) but welcome to the community :D . Always good to see informed members coming out... wait, that sounded wrong... :p

Hey dr_other...nice to see more new faces around here :)

I'm soon going to be experimenting with ripping DVDs myself. I've got a long car journey ahead of me and I can't think of anything better to pass the time than watching the Nadesico movie :D I'll tell you if I run in to any difficulties (thanks for the links Vimacs!).

Yes, many many thanks Vimacs. I would just love to watch a bit of Bebop on the go, something I just bought and watched for the first time today. I like it!

I will attempt it a bit later tonight... I tried Virtualdub a bit a few days ago, and got quite confused, instructions at gp32emu and all... codecs always get me confused, and to be honest I have never tried this sort of stuff before. I am confident I will figure it out though! And if not I can always fall back on one at joygp... or entreware.. or whatever it is... please forgive me, I am a bit slow on remembering names.

And, thanks for the tip kotd, but I am pretty sure they are supposed to play GBA games out of the box, just like the web browser (I can't wait to use that!) So I think I will just try to slam the gba cart right through the screen. That should work! If I push hard enough...

Noooooo....

That may break your screen.

You need to take a hammer, a GP32 and a GBA. Put the GP32 on top of the GBA. Smash with your hammer until the GBA's cartrige slot is right under the GP32's SMC slot. Hot glue all the spaces, and you have a dual-slot GP32 that can take GBA and GP32 games. Just don't try turning it on... It will act like it is broken, but I promise that it won't be as long as you don't try to turn it on.

;)

Oh man...

Hot glue? Can't I just use tape?

Oh man... watch some random brand new member of the forums read this and take it as true...

Attention: New guy

I want pics!

You will note (and this is to all the folk who go on about how the board now flames people at a moments notice), that this new guy has not been flamed, this is because of his attitude - and knowing how to fit into the group.

Well done dr_other you are most welcome, we could do with more like you.

You use the latest version of Xvid? I was under the impression that only the older version of Xvid would work. Cool, I'll have to try this.

Ah man, thanks Mallrat and Telco, it honestly isn't all that hard keeping up with all of you. Please excuse me if I ever hit a bump, but I think I can do just fine without a lot of questions... other then this darn DVD ripping thing!

Before I get to that though, I would like to note that I just woke from my bed, walked groggily to the door, and put on my hat (I try to look my best) while opening the door for a UPS man. I promptly took my package from him, and, when I closed the door, promptly opened it. Ahhh... beautiful. I will leave shortly to go buy a SMC, and then, may the gaming commence!

In any case, I might have to take you up on that spray (Nice job on the GB32 by the way.) I attempted it last night and got some form of error... it told me that something was unavailabe. Oh! I would also like to note that I am in the U.S.A. if that makes any difference. I did manage to convert one movie already stored on my computer, so I will be checking that out A.S.A.P. to see if I can at least do that correctly. I know I should probably tell you all the name of the error, but I just woke up... so I will report more on this later, perhaps after a few games Tobi Drummer, Entropy, and... maybe String? I am a minamilistic man!

Oh, and moz... well I am sorry... *LEERS*

Oh wow!

I just popped the CD Craig gave me in, and wow! That is a very nice bonus!

Makes me feel stupid for spending time going around getting the cream of the crop games, because he put 'em all here!

Just kidding... because I apparently missed a bunch of it!

Many thanks Craig. Many many thanks,

for DVD ripping:

you should definatelly get DVDx 2.2 (great tool, google for it), it´ll allow you to record video from DVD´s directly, without encrypting them to your harddrive first.

with DVDx 2.2 its good, to rip the full movie as mpeg or mpeg2 (VCD or SVCD format) and then afterwards compressing it using virtual dub and XVID (have a look at www.joygp.com for the right codec), so you can tweak it (adjust brightness etc.)

Hmm, downloaded... but I have no idea how to do it still... I am sure it is fairly simple, so I will figure out how to do it.

And now I go buy an SMC card.

Many thanks.

I got the SMC awhile back and fiddled about with Crazy Jack and the MP3 player while playing FFXI. I think I have the whole writing the the SMC card thing down.

Now I am going to attempt to put Wind-Ups on there... time to use the search button, I think. The GP32Emu site has an FAQ, but it looks out of date, and yours didn't help to much, sorry to say. I need step-by-steps!
