Gp32linux And Opie :) [pda]

Right, I'm a newbie to Linux, and would like to try this out on my GP.

Could someone talk me through what it does/how to use it? I've just woken up and my head hurts :p

Go to the project page (www.sourceforge.net/projects/gp32linux), then go to the files, there's a HowTo in HTML format somewhere around there. Skip all the compiling parts, and there's something about the propaganda release at the bottom, near the FAQ.

does anyone knows how to get rid of pressing the 'sms' before each line?
Because in Castaway you need to press it only once.
Would it be possible to have to press it only once for all?

By the way: I managed to get xaos to work, so you can have fractals in ascii art...
I got mplayer working too, but only with a .mpg
We are currently working on different things, including a package system and applications porting.

Anyone wanting to help will be welcome!

Wow! Looking seriously great! It's very responsive, I never have to retype the same letter!

@cyberic: You still want your serial cable?

Looking at the code, the 'yes' button is used as enter. Thats the reason why the chatboard is returning to numeric mode (press it, then only the number keys, cursors, space, and top row will return anything). Pressing yes, no, shift+backspace, or backspace too many times will always switch back to numeric mode as those keys should return an ericsson handset out from sms mode or simliar. So far I can't find any commands the chatboard will respond to, so I've been unable to force it back into text mode from software :(. The only way to limit the effect is to avoid the use of all top row keys (there are other problems with those keys that I don't have time to explain at the moment - I'll try and post more later).

hey everybody
lets all say a big tanks
to toholl and cyberic
they are doing an amazing work !!!

----------------
the news
cyberic suceed in compiling kdrive [ aka tiny x , aka xfree for embedde], mplayer,
...

following cyberic advice , i switched to squashfs
and the applications are loading faster now ! :)

we are working on a standard filesystem structure and packages managing

I succeded only with one avi and one .mpg

At the moment there is a timing problem with gp32linux (the time is going by slowly, ie sleep 1 sleeps for more than 1 real second).
And this is causing a slowdown when mplayer tries to synchronise the video.
By increasing the framerate, the mpg is displayed quite smoothly, at a normal speed.

Sound isn't working yet, toholl still has some work to do on it.

And as Ingeras said, I have an X server running right now, so now we need a mouse driver more than ever! Somebody (sorry I forgot his nick, something like 'balgrog' ?) is already working on it, but would like some help.
Look for some code in the /Documentation/input directory of a linux kernel.

@Tristan: yes, I definitely want this cable! with it, I will go much faster than now, and maybe I'll be able to browse the WWW, linking the GP to my PC! So yes, I still want it!

PS: I'll be in holiday until june the 26th, so things are gonna be slow!
But be patient, it will certainely be worth it.

I'm really impressed with the speed at which the development is going for GP/Linux...

I've just ordered myself a converted chatboard to have a play around... there are a couple of Linux SDL games I'd like to try out on the GP32 .. including Crimson Fields (a Battle Isle clone, and it can run at 320x240) and a couple of others.

:)

great news... argh i have to get a chatboard now...
cant wait to try out a new version with mplayer or xfree...

Maybe a joystick driver would be more useful, because some programs exist to translate joystick events into mouse events...
(ie http://freshmeat.net/projects/js2mouse/)
That would give us a joystick and a mouse driver at the same time.

Baallrog is already working on it, maybe you could share the work!

Ah yes, just to keep you updated: I have XFree running, and... the screen can be rotated with a simple command, so it will be possible to switch from landscape to portrait mode!!

Stay tuned

lots of interesting links for the mouse driver :)
cool

hope cyberic suceed in compiling gtk too
because an xserver without apps is not usefull ;)

i am fighting with toolkits , uclibc and segmentations faults
driving me crazy
dont know where it comes from , will try more end of next week

if someone know good links for arm uclibc gcc toolkits and documentation ...
:)

im sry that i cant help, i use linux sometimes but i dont know really much yet.
still i cant wait to use it on the gp..
what are the first programs you plan to port and what is possible, is a mp3 ogg player possible, dont blame me, i know there are allready many i just want to know.
hope someone get a mouse working.

Thing is, memory is scarce. The program probably doesn't use a lot of memory, but still, it adds up. A seperate mouse driver is ofcourse more work, but you'll save a few precious kb's of memory
