Well i finally managed to complete my puzzle land game for the gp2x.

Puzzle Land is a remake of the gameboy game Daedalian opus also known as puzzle road in japan. The gameplay and levels are the same but the graphics, music and sounds have changed. It's a puzzle game with 36 levels, in each level you'll get a number of blocks and with these blocks you'll have to try to create a pre-defined shape. In later levels you'll have more blocks to your dis-posal and the difficulty will increase. you could easily spend 30 minutes on one puzzle.

I've tested it already and couldn't find any bugs anymore but one can never know so it's here for u guys to test it out

i'll be doing this already: (updates are done already as of 20/04/2006)
- Usage of the joystick button to drop blocks / pickup blocks and make menu selections
- perhaps a little speed up of the character in between / password scene
- change graphics to png to save some space
- Redo the resizing of the graphics to get rid of the purple lines in some graphics

but i won't be doing any major changes anymore like in gameplay etc.

update:
i've done the changes i spoke about earlier in this post so images are now in png, and 1.5 mb of space is saved now :) i also increased the speed of the character as well as included the joystick button for actions / menu's.
the download link is the same.
i'll keep it here a few more days and if noone finds any bugs i'll release it to the general public and post about it in the news section

Wow, this is really good!

I havent found any bugs as of yet.

I must admit i lost all patience with level 9 though, and turned my gp2x off before i threw it out of the window!

Will keep playing. :)

Good news no bugs (yet) lets keep it that way hehe :)

it gets even harder, there are 36 levels in total with 13 diffrent shapes, the last shape u get on the last level doh. but that's what the passwords are for so u can start on the level u reached before again. it's not a game u'll finish easily, i for one when i played it on the gameboy was never able to finish it and i played it a lot

holy crap, this is difficult as hell... or rather as in "holy fuck I will bang my head onto the wall and throw my gp2x out the window" difficult. But it's fun and can be very relaxing which is a nice thing for a change ;-)

Why is this file soooooooooo ultra big???
Please consider we are not all DSL user. I still have to use ISDN, so I have to think atleast five times before downloading 11mb. Please release a version without music (what else can make it that big?), so I can enjoy the game, too!
I loved DO!

Yes the OGG's take up about 9.6mb so thats all the space.

I have yet to play this (its on my SD card) but it seems it uses passwords, could you possibly change that?
Have an unlock system, where I could play any level I have already beat without a piece of paper in front of me.

I made a version myself where i replaced the ogg music files with an ogg music file that has 5 seconds of silence, the file is now 1.58 mb a bit bigger then iignotus one, but i wanted to be sure the game got a valid ogg file instead of an empty file, u never know :) and the file type is zip so that's always a bit bigger then rar. i could make a 7 zip version that would make the file size 1.3 mb but i don't think many people can deal with 7zip

it's availible here http://www.willemssoft.be/zip/puzzlelandgp2xnomusic.zip u can link to it from where ever u like it's on my server so no problem.

Changing the passwords system to an unlocking system would take some time doh and i'd have to remake the title screen graphics as well then so i'm not to eager to do this. but i'll take it into account for possible future games i'll be making. i was thinking on a sokoban / boxxle clone

To play MIDIs, you need Timidity, which is some 30MB.

You could use MODs, however, as they're built in to SDL_mixer.

Doesn`t the ac97 audio in the GP2x have midi capabilities built into it.
I know the GP32 needs timidity to play midi files, But surely the GP2x doesn`t too ?.

Though i do think mod files would be a better choice, Especially with the possibility of user choice.

Actually yes a MOD file would be better, considering the files from the game I have listened to were obviously generated by a mod player in the first place....

Listening again to the files they sound like they were created with a standard midi editor using a basic instrument set, a bit like the GM set supplied by creative labs for the sound blaster AWE or 128 or plus range. either way, it's a standard midi set.

If joyrider likes, I would love to help with the audio side of things.
