After a period of just on a month with a fully working GP2x (and Loving it I have to say :) ) I noticed on the UK website a mention of the v2.0.0 firmware so I downloaded it! Cleaned up a 255mb SD card and extracted the 9 files contained in the archive to it Pluged in the console to the mains, slotted in the SD card and powered on.

Upgrading Firmware message (Great I thought) at least I have a firmware on the card this time!!

After about 5 - 10 minutes the upgrading firmware screen faded to black.

After a futher half hour (so 40 minutes in total) and no further progress the screen turned to those lovely "Low Power" lines (On a mains transformer Doubtful I thought) knowing my worst fears had come true (again) I now have a brick.

PLEASE DO NOT upgrade the firmware to v2 unless you really do want to risk a brick :(

Any kind sole offering an unbricking service in Ireland, UK or Germany would be great. This is the 2nd time it has bricked in the 6 weeks I have had the console, Personally I think it is outweighed by the wonderful XviD and DivX playback, but it is Damn annoying!

Oh well, Back to the Xbox 360 I guess, but that is not as portable!

OMG...the same has just happened to me it seems....the screen is green and saying loading gp2x firmware 2....

Shit...might have to power down and restart...but it might be bricked......WTF

just turn it off and turn it back on .

And hold down start select again .

Tried, No dice! I guess that is fine if it will even turn on without a nice fade in of Coloured lines. mine is definately bricked again, I do hope I do not have such a long time to wait for a fix / replacement this time :-(

i got to the green screen to then it crashed so i tried the select and start thing and after firmwire it came up "patching" then "formatting" which i never had b4.

I got an intergral 1gb SD

Doesn't anyone read guides?

When you first start up the GP2X with your firmware upgrade on it, it'll update UBoot. This UBoot cannot start jffs2/cramfs/open2x (or whatever you currently have) firmwares. Therefore it hangs at green screen. You then switch off the GP2X and, whilst holding select and start, switch it back on. This will flash the rest of the firmware, and your GP2X will boot, then format and patch, and then work normally. You can then delete the files off your SD.

Basically, YOUR GP2X WILL HANG FIRST TIME ROUND. THIS IS NORMAL.

I think the very least they (GPH) could have done was have it print up a message saying something like, "First stage flash has now completed. If you can see this screen then it is safe to switch off. Press "Start" and "Select" as you swtich the power back on to perform the next stage of the update."

If there is anything that annoys me about the firmware update cycle it's that there's this lack of attention to detail, especially for something so critical to the machine which the end-user is expected to do. I mean, it has a screen built into it, why not use it to inform the user of what's going on?

THat is great for those people ou tthere who got to the green screen. Mine faided straight from the "Updating" screen to Coloured lines. And is now bricked, so I guess uboot is trashed! No amount of powering on with ot without Start & select pressed will help.

Oh well another mail to GP2x.co.uk, Hopefully it'll be either fixed or replaced, it is after all ont 6 weeks old!

Regards

Craig
