Gp2x Bootchart

I've just done your upgrade, and I must say that the boot time is very fast. I just have a couple of questions.

Is it possible to revert back to a read-write filesystem?
Can I change the skin somehow?

Oh, and it seems to run serial-bash.gpu every time I boot. (USB Serial command line)

Just timed it: 15.09 seconds!
Mine boots as fast as yours with no OS modifications at all :p

Great to hear from everyone who's got it working.

For those who want a different menu skin, etc, mwolsen just saved me the trouble of writing a guide :)

The next release will redirect some things to your sd card, like the LCD settings and stuff, as well as any other suggestion, let me know what you want!

LCD settings
Video placemarker
E-Book placemarker

Those are my essentials.

BTW: I like what you did with /etc/inittab and /etc/profile :) . One of the first things that crossed my mind when I saw their version of /etc/profile was to move the system initialization stuff to a more appropriate place, like /etc/rc.d/init.d/.

Hmm well hopefully soon some kind of gp2xmenu replacement will appear that allows the setting of clock speed then it would be nice to have that bundled with this fast booting.. Now uboot takes more time than the kernel to boot

This is great news. Someone should be made a guru for this...

This should be the first step in creating a community based on a new, user made Firmware, wherein those devs who are capable and willing, can pool their efforts into creating this monster. Because a breakthrough here and there (Spain, Germany, the UK...) won't make a bit of difference unless we can organize some way of putting these imporovements to work.

It could be here, or someone could create a Wiki or a new forum totally based on the community firmware.

Then we'll be cooking with gas.

I presume the current wiki and svn will be enough.

But seriously, how many GP2XSpain people come here, or use the wiki? I'd assume a few, but I think it's a bloody good idea to take out that step, so people don't always have to report back to each other, etc. over a bunch of forums.

I've updated to version 0.0.2.

http://brendan.mine.nu/gp2x/cramfs/

The LCD settings will still not be saved. These seem to be stored on an I2C chip, the driver for which has not been included in the source release.

Code:
Redirect video placemark and ebook bookmarks to SD at /mnt/sd/home

    Added useful programs:
        screen
        lrz
        lsz
        strace

lots of usb host support - added art103's modules - untested

    added DaveC's lcd tweaker image

There may be a kernel flasher release by Robster for those of you stuck without flashable SD cards.

1 minute too slow :D !
I just did version 0.0.1 and it works great. 14.8 seconds bootup thankyou very much.

This is why I love open source. Great work guys.

So, if you change you settings with the official firmware 1.4 which CAN write to this chip, then install your modded version, then it should still remember what you set them to right?

Hey guys, you probably know this already, but don't put the image file onto the sd card until after you've done the filesystem thing. I made this mistake and I'm still trying to sort it out.

I don't think so.

When would the data in the chip be overwritten though?
So, do I want to flash my Gp2X twice more just to find out :D
Maybe later!

Just installed .0.0.2 just fine with the gpu script. I installed it over 0.0.1 without flashing to GPH's kernel first. So far so good.

I've been messing around with games to see which ones get broken by the updated kernel. Here is a partial list that lock when I try to run them.

Memory
Mess
Gnuboy
Scummvm
n-tris
Falldown (This one hurts as we have frequent competitions here)

The thing is, I like all these programs very much, but I am willing to leave them all behind in favor of the faster boot times. In a perfect world the devs could update these programs so they don't write to the nand (I'm assuming that's why they don't work right.). Perhaps a redirect layer could be written so that calls to the nand get sent to the sd card? I'm no programmer so I'm not sure if that makes any sense at all.

Thanks for the continued effort theoddbot! Fantastic work!
