once and for all is it possible to fully emulate GBA. with hard work a good coder and lots of time good we reach a GBA emu with sound and save.

Huh?

Seems to me that if we can't emulate the SNES with sound, we can't emulate a GBA with sound. By "Us" and "We" of course, I mean "Them" and "They", as in... the few dedicated, experienced coders coders. :)

well the new snes9xgp is supposed to be about 90% full speed with sound which is great im not sure if it will have save but it might before public release

No. It could achieve maybe 20fps without sound and be able to load smaller sized games (32Mbit) only. And since GP32 has no graphics processor, it would have to perform everything the GBA's powerful 2D GPU does in software. Sound is even more work, as once again GP32 has to process everything in software, while the GBA has a sound chip and that would also need to be emulated if you wanted sound.

You're better off hoping for nearly full speed SNES with sound, but full speed GBA with sound - no way. Plus there are resolution issues, but that's the least of the worries.

We might be able to expect something that plays full speed without sound, but with it - I'm less sure.

That said, if someone did manage to code something from scratch in pure ASM, then who knows? It certainly wouldn't run anything above 32 Mbit though (4 megs)

Full SNES is surelyy possible, given the proper time, skills, and resources. But the GP32 coders seem to lack this to an extent(obviously they have talent/skill but there are more skillfull people that could os osme of it better)i dunno about the full GBA emulator...maybe what do i know

The Gameboy advance has way to much custom hardware for processing graphics and sound, I don't think a playable emulator would be possible, but I hope I'm wrong

So many pesimistic words ! Of course, you can´t take an GBA emulator source code from, say, windows and expect it will work well and fast on GP32. Really no way here.

However, the GBA emulation on GP32 is definitely doable. The GBA hardware is quite simple. Much more simpler than Snes, Atari ST, Genesis or even C64.
GBA uses the same kind of CPU (ARM7 vs ARM9 in GP32), so most probably GP32 should run GBA binaries out of the box. There is also simplified Z80 core in GBA CPU, though. It's due to backward compatibility with GB/GBC. I don't know if it's used by GBA games, too. If so, it needs to be emulated as well.

Then there are two custom chips, GPU and SPU. GPU performs sprite and scrolling operations. SPU does simple sound processing. Similar chips are in almost every other game console/home computer. There is really nothing special in GBA hardware when compared to other, already very well emulated, machines.

As said above, the GBA's hardware is very generic, that was why a decent emulator appeared for it so soon on the PC. It took years for SNES to be perfected.

As for the Z80 core, I think that is only for GBmono and color games. The old carts have a different shape which the GBA can detect with a little switch and boots using the different processor.

I'm not so sure with the sound though, I *think* GBA games can use the old GB sound chip.

As for all the swishy GBA special effects, they could always be substituted for a lesser effect until speed is good enough ( I don't know if you can do that, I'm not a programmer)

I'm not so sure with the sound though, I *think* GBA games can use the old GB sound chip.

The GBA SPU (soundchip) is basically an old GB/GBC soundchip plus two additional channels for 8bit sampled sound.

The only effects in GPU are layers, sprites, rotation, alpha and mosaic effect. Pretty simple to emulate, especially on 66MHz ARM9 CPU. Also don't forget this all is done in 240x160 resolution.
The hardest part of the GBA emulation would be the CPU and basic glue above (IRQ, I/O..), not the custom chipset emulation.

BTW, here is a detailed description of the GBA system.

I JUST downloaded the vidual boy advance source code and there is a folder named gp. i checked the source and it looks like a gp32 program and it mentions gp32 ;)

what do you think???
I think.HOLY CRAP :D

I don't know what to think, other than that properly will not work. Try compiling the shite, but it sure is Gp32, because I see the firmware file betting loaded in there.

I would have the second i found it but i don't have the devkit setup, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  there is also one (that isn't quite as long) that has gfx conversion i believe :D . it would be fricken awsome tho...

it would be so awesome if someone gets this compiled... even if its a 30% without sound....
