wow that's a lot of retro gamers. actually i think retro gaming would eventually become more popular than current gaming. which is why some game companies (nintendo) are aggressively taking down rom & emulator sites. they are destroying art and culture for profit. ok - i guess they own the IP but it feels like a book burning.

Copyright was introduced supposedly to improve culture, and now you are using copyright as an excuse for impoverishing culture.

I guess retrogaming is popular, Gameboys are getting expensive. Newer Gameboy clones are bad too, none have a screen as good or better than the GBC has.

Hey Lambda - you like my book burning imagery don't you

Today was the first day of Gamescom 2024. I also had a look yesterday at Devcom.
Here are some first pictures.

When you go to Gamescom, what would you see?

You can arrive with car, tram, train and probably with a bicycle or just walk.
tram.jpg

For trade visitors you'll use the entry West:
eingang_west.jpg

But there are more entries obviously with a name like 'West', like South (Sud) at the train station:
eingang_sud.jpg

You'll be greeted by a big sign to make it clear you indeed arrived at the Gamescom.
gamescom_logo.jpg

In the background you could already spot it: a new building. The Confex building is the white building at the back and was only used for the Devcom. (Confex is probably short for Conference & Exhibition hall I guess)
cognex_building.jpg

And a map to show you which hall is which:
map.jpg

On the outside you can also see the number of the building but in some cases it shows an ad or additional information.

The Retro Area at Gamescom (Hall 10 top level) is where you can find the DragonBox shop and our forum members.

The DragonBox shop (yes I remove people from photos sometimes):

If you are looking for the best and clear graphics check out these HDMI mods for classic consoles:

Obviously the Pyra was there joined by friends:

You can also spot the cute DragonBox stickers.

Askarus playing on the big screen and the large NES controller:

Asking a Gameboy to rate the other handhelds:

Near the shop there is obviously more retro stuff, like the Commodore 64:

An Atari 2600:

Dreamcast:
dreamcast.jpg

A NES:

And a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis:

More retro:
retrospiele.jpg

And some sweet retro game boxes to view:
museum.jpg

And I ran into der8auer and Ben's hardware and shook hands:

And in case you play the Epix game I found some when walking around:
epix1.jpgepix2.jpgepix3.jpgepix4.jpgepix5.jpgepix6.jpg

And if you just like QR codes:
moreQR.jpg

And maybe someone knows who these people are, I guess some German politicians?

I also ran into one of the developers of the game Schim.

At the Gamescom there are also vehicles, like promoting (German) cars.

New BMW's:
bmw_1.jpg bmw_x3.jpg

Mercedes:
mercedes_eclass.jpg

Porsche:
porsche.jpg

A rally car:
hyundai.jpg

A police car:
copcar.jpg

RC cars:
rc_cars.jpg

And there are some other vehicles, like motors:
motor.jpg

And I guess there is a motor in the Sonic 3 movie?
motor_sonic.jpg

And whatever this is, it was there also:
claas.jpg

And I was told in this photo there should be some car but it must be hidden very well:

And if you come by car but park on the street instead of the parking garage, you'll get fined.
Btw. if you park on the street next to the Koelnmesse you are only allowed to part there for max. 5 hours and it's the same price as the garage (20 euro per day).
If you are lazy you can also park at the parking from the hotel near the gas station, it's really close to one of the entrances and it's 8 euro's more per day and skip part of the traffic.

I notices that German license plates can imply some deeper message:

The Byowave Proteus controller:

I've seen these guys before but this year they are Xbox certified. If you have a disability and want to play games but cannot due to not being able to use a regular controller: the Proteus controller might be for you. If you really want to have a modular controller it might be for you to, but it's a bit expensive so it must be really important for you ($299).
It also works on the PC to by using the included USB-dongle.

It officially released on Gamescom I was told.

When ordering the controller you'll get a box with the full kit to build a controller.

What can you build with it? This controller:

Each cube can have stuff attached, on the back you see decorative discs to protect the electronic surface.

side_detach.jpg
You can detach the handles and it has an ingenious system for locking it in place. The cog-like structure can split where one side locks in place.

You can build a single-handed controller to:

This was a setup for debugging the controller:

I played the game: Bobls, a precision platformer.

You can find the game on Steam:
A photo of the devs:

I posted a link already, but if you love those QR codes:

I've seen games made in Unreal, Unity and Godot. But this was the first I've seen made in Game Maker. You can find more games made in this engine on the Game Maker website: https://gamemaker.io/en/showcase

Btw. Microsoft announced their own accessibility controller: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2024/08/21/xbox-accessibility-adaptive-joystick-thumbstick-toppers/

Nice impressions, always interesting to see how's Gamescom doing. I Never visited the Expo in Cologne but I was a few times in Leipzig at the old Games Convention, good times. I always took a long visit to the retro-areas and I still think these are worth a closer look, even for the casual audience.
In german TV ,they had a report straight from the GC retro area and I recognize the booth with the C64 from that report. Very nice to show that part of the GC to the wide audience.

Time for one of my favorites, the Indie section. There are too many games to play in a single day.
