my gp2x didnt arrived yet, but i still have some questions about the firmware update process.. Why so much people keep bricking their units trying to update theirs firmwares? Its should be a "safe" process, right??

i read at many topics people saying that it was playing a game and the unit freezed. turned off and on, and got white lines.. what the hell? TRIAL UNITS?

and i have question about the SD: why the hell sometimes you just place a SD card in the unit and it tries to update the firmware, of course, fucking with it?

Im too scared to update mine  . Im going to wait untill a safe method comes out if ever... There isnt one currently that doesnt have a warning.

Everything works fine is 1.0.0 anyways, so far.. HEHEHE
And for the last thing you wrote, it has something to do with formating sd cards/ using a card reader and it makes the gp2x a walking time bomb.

Merry Christmas fella

Rob has updated his much more reliable updater and sent over a beta, i'm going to test it on 40 GP2X consoles using various attempts to actually make it fail and will report back with the results.

Such sneaky fail attempts include different formats on the SD, different brands of SD and different speeds of SD. Then mix.

ya im kinda scared to try

since i couldnt get the system to even see the test files either lol

I tried the test program... 100%
Then the Update... 100%

with my Platinum unsupported card

yea

Worked just fine for me using the update program and it seems to be that way with 99% of the people who use it.

Just seriously, dont risk ANYTHING mate. the only risk i took is putting my BRAND new SD card in my gp2x and it was bricked, after 1 hour of having it :( so dont take ANY risks, please, i dont want to see the same thing happening to you.

edit: sounded a bit vauge, basically dont do anything your not 100% sure about, ie. firmware update and all that, but if you take care then you'l be just fine mate :)

ahahah marry Xmas for you too :*

and, for the SD card formatting? LOL! why the hell a wrong filesystem type make the gp2x try to flash itself? maybe because linux dont like windows-oriented filesystems?

Acctually the Update process happens before Linux ever starts and is controled by UBoot. :) Thats the reason the cards have to be formated a certain way. Further more the format the card is suposed to be is a "windows-oriented filesystem" fat32 is the standard on Windows 98 and ME.

Thought you would like to know.

Not only trying to update is unsafe, but just turning on your gp2x with a sd card in it is unsafe.

A good bunch of us have lost our systems for no apparent reason to the brick fairy.

Hope it does not happen to you.

yeah, as do i. When do you reckon GBAX are going to be open again? i really need to contact them, im geting a ds tommorow to drown my sorrows :(

Yep... it should be safe as it's now it's very frustrating.

For reasons why it's happening:
1. bugs in the firmware and/or updater
2. using weak (or unprepared NiMH - they need some care) batteries what are causing errors in flashing nand memory
3. using depleted batteries - user's error (I bricked my unit this way - probably as my "wonderfull" charger didn't charge one battery at all)

Well... hardware wise no but the firmware isn't exactly as it shoud be. There is reason why we have "first edition".

Because there are bugs. It will get better with time.

For me the gp2x couldn't have the build flash at all. Just some rom code to be able boot from SD (or whatever). Flash memory isn't expensive now and I don't mind using 30-40MB for os for 0.5GB card (and even less for bigger cards).

format your SD card before putting it in the GP2X. If it still f's up, then send it back to where you bought it from for a fix... or if you're feeling adventurous, try the 'unbricking' guide. nothing to lose: it's already broken

It keeps things simpler if you buy the gp2x AND the sd card from the same place, then there's no question of a 'blame game' of which bit was faulty. you can just send the whole lot back.
