Here is a port of Fotoxx
http://kornelix.squarespace.com/fotoxx/

Fotoxx is a free open source Linux program for photo editing and collection management. The goal is to meet most user needs while remaining fast and easy to use.

Overview
Navigate a large image collection with a thumbnail browser, click on images to view or edit. Import camera RAW files and edit with 16-bit color. Save edited images as TIFF-8/16, PNG or JPEG with adjustable compression. Edit the whole image or a selected area, with smooth edge-blending. Edit functions have live feedback using the full window. Add tags, dates, star-ratings, comments and captions to images and search using these criteria plus image file names. Fotoxx uses your image files wherever they are. All user-supplied image data (tags, comments, etc.) is saved inside the image files in a standards-compliant manner (EXIF, IPTC), and remains available for alternative photo editors and collection managers. Fotoxx does build and maintain an index of searchable items, providing a search speed of thousands of images per second.

the exif functionality doesn't work as I couldn't find the sourcecode for the exif-tools.

How well does this run? USually photo viewing/thumbnailing/editting is a pig even on a reasonably powerful desktop :)

It is ok for smaller pictures, that are 1024x768 or a little more. Even editing is ok. I have only tested it with pictures of this resolution. I really don't want to carry thousands of photos with 12 MP each around.
But for things like that, there is the betasection. Feel free to download and try what is possible.
