Hi, I just bought a Caanoo :D which should be with me in a few days..

I've bought it to play Mame more that anything else so could someone recommend which Firmware and version of Mame I should put on in order to get the best performance from the emulator?

Thanks, and man i'm looking forward to receiving my caanoo. . Have been wanting one for ages!

Hi bux,

Mame works really well on the Caanoo. Just put the latest firmware (1.6.1) and the latest Mame Caanoo version on it (all found in the download sections) and you are ready to go.

Link firmware: http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/caanoo.cgi?0,0,0,0,42,743
Link Mame Caanoo: http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/caanoo.cgi?0,0,0,0,73,679

Mame Caanoo is based on Mame4all so not all roms are working.
Here is al list of games that are working with Mame4all:

There is also Final Burn Alpha for the Caanoo but i haven't tried it out yet.

Have fun! The Caanoo is a great product!

Greetings,
Marco

Thanks very much Marco I can't wait to check it out!

It's funny, I chose to buy the Caanoo instead of the JXDS601 despite the S601 being twice as powerful (so to speak) and half the price.
So most people would think i'm nuts but i'm just really drawn to the Caanoo despite it being an older system now.
I love the way the Caanoo screen is not widescreen and the size of the screen and the console seems about right aswell.
I had a dingoo for a while but it was too small in my opinion.
Anyway i'll report back when I check it out. My brother's going to set it up for me so I won't see it for a week or two until he posts it to me.

Additional: Just noticed the comments about firmware 1.6.1 are pretty negative but i'll still go for it unless anyone tells me otherwise!
..Although if the latest firmware makes no difference to how mame runs then let me know and i'll just leave the firmware it comes with on there

I am not POSITIVE about this, but when i received my Caanoo, it already had 1.6.1 on it.

mame works great, but there are still games that are not compatible with it, which is the only downside. You might want to do some research on your favorite games and how they run (if at all) on mame for Caanoo..

i don't think the firmware really matters as much as just the emulator itself and how the games perform..from what i understand programming emulators is pretty hard

But anyway, get back to me and let me know if 1.6.1 is already installed on your caanoo when you get it in the mail, also, if you need any help setting up MAME, getting games to run, or GNGEO as well i can help out.

Cheers and congrats on your new baby! :p

Hi zsonance!
My brother has confirmed that it's arrived at his house and yes it has 1.6.1 firmware already on there so that's good news. He's putting mame on there later this evening but he tells me first impressions are that it's a great little handheld so i'm well pleased.. He's gonna put the 'Franxis' mame on there, not the older one by Simon, which i'm assuming is the way to go. Thanks for your offer to help.. i'll let u know if i get stuck, but my whizz of a brother is so good at all this stuff so things should be ok. ..what i do need help with is choosing a decent correct-sized zip/protect case! :)

Regarding a case, I grabbed a generic soft-case for (I think) a DS. It was quite cheap and holds the Caanoo snugly, with a little internal pouch for a screen cloth and spare card.
I'd suggest taking your Caanoo to a game store and seeing what might fit. You'll find something.
