I think it depends a lot on the type of disc, but we had no real way of knowing that back in the day. I've got backups on silver/gold discs from the late 90s that are still good, but some of my blue/silver discs are becoming unreadable. The silver/gold discs have been stored mostly in drawers though, while the worst of my blue/silver discs was in shadow almost exclusively, but out in the open. That said, I think I've got photo discs which were blue/silver and stored quite well which are becoming full of data holes too.
I don't trust my blue/silver DVD discs beyond about seven years now, and I'm moving them onto mechanical hard discs as they get to that sort of age. Luckily those are cheap enough these days.
