Easy back up

I want to use one secure Pandora dedicated for non-gaming and mainly as PIM. I like to have an easy back up method for the full disk and the most convenient seems to me something like a raid 1 method between one card in slot 1 and another in slot 2 but then not contentiously because that is probably too demanding.

I also prefer to have the data encrypted if possible but I don't want the Pandora to become lagging.

Any suggestions? I was thinking about using SL4P.

BTW. I haven't bought sd cards for that purpose yet. Was planning on buying two 8-32 GB cards - sandisk. Not sure if transfer speed is really important in this case.

RAID on removable devices is never a good idea.

I dont see what advantage S4L will offer you.

Mixing data security and data availability questions never end in a good answer. Let's forget encryption for now.

1) What data do you need to backup ? (Is the OS required, do you need to backup all the appdata, only the documents, whatever ?)

2) What kind of retention do you need ? (is overwriting last backup OK, etc ?)

3) How long is the recovery delay requiered ? (is waiting the next day to acces your backup OK ?)

4) Is using the "clouds" an option ? (from your security request I would bet "no", but who knows better than you)

Answer these 4 questions (at least for yourself), and you're getting closer to a backup plan.

Not sure about that myself, but I thought it was more capable of compiling packages out of the box so more available PIM software.

OS is not required, but would be nice. I think the title of my post should be "convenient back up" instead of "easy back up". Most important to backup are documents - then appdata - then apps - then OS.

It would be nice to always have an sd back up that can be added in an another Pandora and immediately works as before. OS is in that scenario not required, but apps and appdata are.

2) What kind of retention do you need ? (is overwriting last backup OK, etc ?)
Yes, overwriting is fine. Just the last version.

3) How long is the recovery delay requiered ? (is waiting the next day to acces your backup OK ?)
Yes. Daily - weekly or manually (by starting a script)

4) Is using the "clouds" an option ? (from your security request I would bet "no", but who knows better than you)
Indeed clouds are no option. The only thing I might do is save an encrypted version of the back up somewhere online.

Use sshfs or scp with rsync with a server and let a script copy the stuff for you after X hours (and when wlan is avaible)?

Backing up the OS without a mean to restore it is no use, all you need is a backup of your SD card ;)

If overwriting is fine, then just grab 2 identical SD card, the left one for usage, the other one for backup.

Have a script that DD the first card on the other one every day and call it a day (and let the backup card stay read-only while not in backup).

I for one, just copy the card content on my destop on a (relative) regular basis. And that's way enough for me.

Couldn't the rsync script be started from the Pandora and just copy stuff from SD card in slot 1 to slot 2? Why is a server needed? BTW this Pandora doesn't have a wlan (and I don't want it). No connection to internet or other devices.

DD? But aren't you then copying the whole content every time? Seems like overkill and probably takes more time then incremental back ups or just change updated files. And what about the SD card, wouldn't it shorten its lifespan?

Yes of course :) . This would be the most simple solution.
