I assume this is the old version that Alerino mentions (the repo version is 2.10) Alternatively, emesene (a single-protocol MSN client) is in the repo. Maybe try that while you're waiting for Pidgen to be fixed?

It doesn't like UTF-8 though, gives errors with German umlauts and eszett. That may be a error related to pidgin itself, not the port.
