I was flipping throu an Edge magazine (don't remember which issue, but it's the one with Crysis on the cover). On Crysis article there was a guy's face rendered very realistically. I mean too realistically if you know what I mean. To me, it'll be freaky to play games like GTA or Halo with graphics too much like real people. I'd rather have a unique art style rather than total realism; when you see paintings, drawing everything photo-realistic is not the best approach since Renessaince days, right? What do you think?

It depends which game.
true gta looking real would be freaky i guess.
but gor othre games it would be good.
I liked games like XIII, but i wouldnt want to play all games in a cartoon

Do we have more choices between cartoonie and realistic?

Late 90's games with pitiful attempts at realism look really bad and have aged really badly, by comparison the cartoony style makes several games timeless. Its a shame no console chose a vector over bitmap, as my only gripe.

But today we are starting to see a level of realism that we haven't seen before, graphics cards have become computers in themselves, and they suit the game that have being produced.

I do wish for others to venture into waters like that of XIII becuase I loved the idea(although it wasn't great).

well, crysys looks very impressive, there is that picture of that people standing arround a barrack, the thumbnail looks like a photo, its very great, or in the video when you see how plants are a bit transperent with light floating through and things bending back and flipping back in position, just great.
I loved farcry for its "Realistic, free and big" world, crysys seems to be just more, better, bigger, very impressive to me.
Either gothic3 or crysy will be the reason for me to upgrade my pc back to highend :)

Well..I do like realistic and not so realistic graphics both at the same time.. For the realistic part, I'd like to think of myself as the character, helps video game immersion (oh yea, I'm samus...booyah--wait isn't samus a girl!?!?!) The problem with that is it never hits the spot, it always has some shortcomings that disturb me...alot... But at the same time, the non-realistic..well..it sometimes takes precedence because it brings its own unique feel. Besides, anime rules...thus I'm much more lenient towards games with that kind of non-realistic rendered figures.

But in the long-run...I'm going to have to detach myself at some limit...I'd go insane after playing resident evil in some futuristic vr, absurdly life-like environment...Motion sickness, extreme fear, AND mental instability for the rest of my life...OMG <--link

18 minutes of UHDV consumes 3.5 terabytes of data wtf?

I prefer cartoony style games like We Love Katamari or Jet Set Radio, though I do enjoy being wowed by realism sometimes.

Raw movies usually take up many terabytes of data before they are converted to film/DVD counterparts.

ive been asking myself the same question about realistic gfx. Dont forget yeah they look real nice so far but i think its going to be another ten or twenty years before they begin to look ultra realistic. when they get so far with gfx what comes next? vr? games like gta would be like controlling a horror film basically. I like the way their going with the new PPU's right now, but 200 quid just for another expansion card to complement the graphics?! good for realistic physics yes but dont like the price.

The only time that I desire realistic graphics would be in a racing game. Sometimes in a fighter. Most of the time I like the hand drawn graphics. The cartoony look. Viewtiful Joe comes to mind. I like the cell shaded look too. It would depend on the story when it comes to an RPG. I mostly like 2D gaming. Hard to find on modern day consoles. You have to go portable mostly.
