Descent 1 and 2: What files do I use?

What data files do I need to run Descent 1 and 2 on Pandora? Something about pigs, or ham, or whatnot. I think Descent 1 uses two files, and 2 uses three.

The bundled documentation ("Y" in minimenu or use the Documentation menu in xfce) will tell you; but yeah, I think the files stood out since they had those odd names. PIG and HOG?

Checking the /tmp/pndrun<whatever> log will actualyl show yo the Descent output error with a list of requirements, but I agree thats a little less obvious. (It would be cool if the pnd was modded to report thathe files were missing from appdata.)

But as you knew the files above in your post, why didn't you just try it and see, rather than posting? or check the included docs,or checked google where d1x and rebirth and so on, or even the d1x home pages, or the install pages for any other port of descent to any system, etc etc.

What I am trying to say is.. you are improving on making a few lesser threads per day, but still way way way too many :)

Consider .. a search on gp32x forum and the first hit I got:

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?/topic/55762-dxx-rebirth-1-and-2/page__hl__descent -> first post shows the answer

Man, just try a little would ya?

edit: The funny thing is.. BP is totally okay in IRC. Still asks a lot of questions but its IRC, so okay, we can chat. But seems his first response here is .. any random thought, "ask in a new thread". First thought, in life, shoudl always be to use your own head, try to figure it out, or try search, or try google. If your first thought is to always ask someone else, you never learn. This is actualyl a life skill -- by always asking everyone, you always become a 'denial of service' -- you just bug someone; if more than 1 person is like that, the target can get nothing done :) But more to point, the target learns to turn you off and ignore you, makes you look stupid. You want to get a good job, stop this behaviour ASAP .. its really annoying, and shows poorly on you. (This is not a get off my lawn story, its true. I was supporting an app years ago and answering ema for it for 2+ hours a day. People think its easy and trivial to just send an email/forum post off, and it takes real work to reply.. so the idiots just ask, and never learn, and the folks that answer get burned. So what we learn from his is not to answer, and to be a dink and always ask since its cheap. All bad. I'm sensitiv to it since I've seen it and done it all before, and I like BP, he's got energy, but I'm close o just putting him on ignore, so I don't hve to wade through all these new threads, especially dumb ones like this one. Everyone else has learned to use search, or does quickly. Everyone else has a etqieutte and doesn't spam.)

You just quit out of IRC; I hope you are not offended, but man :)

- this post wasn't in the right forum even (go to Support or Help depending on the board)

and

- answered above, I did the search for you, and the link direct to the post. and Then you go and ask in IRC, as well!

[23:10:42] <BlueProtoman> What Descent 1 and 2 files do I need for DX-1 Rebirth?

[23:10:54] <BlueProtoman> And where do they go?

Please try.

Maybe I'm being a dick here (don't think so, but maybe ;) , but I'm this close to putting you on ignore. You're not a bad guy, and you're okay in IRC usually, but this is driving a bunch of us mental :)

I mean, how much more clear can it get:

Updated Summary:

(Make sure the data is patched to latest version)

I agree with what Skeezix says. Not necessarily about Blue Proto personally (I think I've been lucky and only caught the tail end of his reign of terror :p ), but in general.

Half the fun is trying to figure out how to get stuff working. You're missing out on a feeling of accomplishment if you don't piece things together yourself.

If you have to ask, you've failed :D

What jeff just said but more thoroughly explained and detailed: How To Ask Questions The Smart Way.

Blue Protoman, no offense intended: by asking lots of questions and keeping people busy with trivial things, you might just achieve the exact opposite of what you wanted to. Many users of internet forums, mailing lists etc. don't like such behavior _at_all_ (i.e. if you have something to say, let it be something meaningful). Just like jeff said, it can be hard work to provide a really good answer that's technically correct, unambiguous and precise. The possible result of such behavior /might/ (and most probably will) be ignorance by the people you are searching for an answer from. However, in any case it will, every single time you ask something this way, lessen the chance that you'll get what you wanted to. Again, I'm just trying to be nice by providing helpful information instead of ignoring, no offense is intended. It's up to you to show your respect to those you are asking, reading the link I provided and adhering to the advice given therein might be the first step to that.

If you have to ask, you've failed :D
I don't agree. You've failed if you DON'T ask after you've done everything you could to find the information you want, wouldn't you say so? Otherwise this statement would be over-generalizing.

Now I'm wondering how to setup controls to make the game playable. For instance configuring nub to be a joystick isn't working in descent - the nub isn't detected as joystick.

I am totally not used to nubs, I always played with mouse, and now the ship is flying in totally strange directions :)

The other board had a big long thread which might help, but I forget

I've nkt played too much but after quite awhile got a workable system, and forgot it now :) i used dpad plus nub with fire and missiles on shoulders and a lot of keys mapped, I think. Descent has just too much 3d control :)

I'll chime in a day or two when i get free time again.. Out and on phone :p . But I think a workable scheme is doae. At least one has beaten D1!

Check the other forum too

Of course. I was completely over-generalizing :D

 Now I'm paranoid... Trust no-one.

By the way I'd just like to thank you for your incredibly helpful posts of late, I'm sure everyone appreciates them.

Thank you, you're welcome.

I typically have very high personal standards for everything I do that's meant to serve a useful (or useless) purpose. Feedback of any kind (especially negative), as well as suggestions and corrections, are explicitly always very appreciated.

Alright, then. I'll trust you in that point.

Trust no-one.
So true. ;)

Very helpful!

Protip: For those of us who bought Descent from GOG, note that the filenames must be lowercase. The GOG installer installed all those files in uppercase, and I had to fix them by hand before D*X-Rebirth would work on the Pandora. (Which is a bit surprising, considering that D*X-Rebirth recognized them just fine on my Ubuntu laptop!)

renameutils "qmv" FTW,

If I'm remembering rightly, I *think* I heard it said that you currently need to manually set the nubs to "Joystick Mode" in the OS before starting the PND.
