I also have a compiler on my Freerunners, and yeah .. it is slow .. but that is the fault of crappy Freerunner hardware, and actually .. its perfectly workable from my perspective. Of course, I learned C on a system that it often took hours to even get logged into, and am used to - or, shall we say, well-trained - going for a coffee in between compiles, whatever the speed of the system.
I just think its convenient to have it on board and no good reason exists not to have it available .. for the light/casual developer, it certainly makes a lot of sense.
EDIT: In your case though, Exophase, I would be concerned that the onboard compiler won't have any of the necessary features to keep you happy, such as NEON support and so on ..
