Just to vent some frustration... My plastic screen in my FLU was badly scratched, so I decided to change it for a glass one that I had made. Up until this point, I had NO dust in my FLU. Whoever was working on mine the day they put the light in it was on his or her A game. 3 years and not one spec of dust. Pulled the trim ring off to change out the glass... had some compressed air, cleaning supplies, the works... put it back together... HOLY SHIT! I've never seem so much f@cking dust! And it's been a real pain in the ass getting it out. I got a couple specs between the light guide and the LCD to boot, and I didn't even touch that... grrrrr.

Anyone have any anti-dust hints?

EDIT: Yes I read through the FAQs and did some searching. Just wondering if anyone else has some new feedback or methods for dedusting their FLUs.

Build a rocket ship, go to outerspace, then take apart clean and reseal take home and enjoy.

ok for real.
Do it in a bath room after some one has taken a shower, or spray some water around the room before you oppen it.

No kidding, I need to find a clean room somewhere. Like where they fabricate silicon and IC's. I read about the bathroom thing maybe I'll give that a try. I used some no residue contact cleaner, and that seems to "demagnetize" the screen a bit from attracking dust.

whats so funny?

thats correct... because the water or shall i say steam if your in a bath room will get the dust in the air and kind of cleanse the air you could say... i think its quit ingenius. :)

That is a tough one. If you already have dust in it you are sunk. I had the same problem. The dust gets stuck in those tiny grooves on the plastic and doesn't come out. Everything I tried just added more fine dust until the screen had all of these tiny specks everywhere, plus a scratch. It looked so shitty that I ripped out the FLU, and "converted" it to a NLU. Then I bought a BLU so it didn't matter :p

I took a screen wiping cloth that came with my PSP, and gently 'sweeped' the dust off of the screen of my cell phone, and that seemed to work very well, not a single speck of dust on my phone screen. :)

Maybe you can do something similar?

Edit: When I say sweep, I had hold of one end of the cloth, and sweeped the other dangling end across the screen a few times, so I didn't put pressure on the screen. It takes a few tries, but eventually you'll get all of the dust off. My cell phone literally has not a speck of dust on the screen. :)

The thing is your cell phone doesn't have those micro grooves that the FLU light guide does. But it could work, now all he has to do is get a PSP so he has the cloth :)

I learned:

Static : electronics :: orange juice : after you brush your teeth

it JUST doesn't end good. :p

Dunno if it's bad for the tft though, but with it around all of the other electronics?

And I've never seen these microgroove things, so I dunno. I'm thinking maybe any cloth would work, just as long as it isn't a paper towel (scratchy).

When i got my new FLU gamepark in the mail 2 days ago i was very happy now that i had gotten rid of the old pos NLU. But then it hit me i realized the screen fell off during the shipping here and loads of dust got in it.

Luckily i got confressed air but it took me like a hour to get the thing back on. Had to use double sided tape. Only 1 dust dot appeared so i was like 'shrug' good enough.

THEN it hit me even more, i got one of those leaking beta FLu so i have to figure out a way to seal the corners, any1 got a suggestion? Im also gunna buy myself a glass one cuz i can only use LCD restorer on the plastic screen for so long.

Enjoy my huge posts :)

Drak.

Theres no chance of killing it with the static towel thingy unless you touch it directly to one of the cpu pins...

Edit: @Drak: Worldwriter used grey silicone sealant around the edge of the grey plastic thingy.

Out of interest, if a glass screen is put on a non-lit is there much chance of dust appearing?

Yes, if you penatrate the layer between the outerscreen and the LCD, you can always get dust in their. However, it is a bit less noticible in your case and easier to get the dust out because yours does not have a light guide. It has these microgrooves in it that the dust just sort of wedges in and is a pain the ass to get out.

As for puting some sort of sealeant around the lightguide to keep the dust out, make sure you get ALL the dust out between the lightguide and the LCD, or it will be a real bitch to get it back out.

lcd + lightguide + screen = two places to trap dust!

cheers! :D

When I changed to a glass screen I used a camera lens brush, brushing along the grooves of the light guide. I managed to remove every spec of dust.

i've got dust on my screan, but i don't know how to get the screan off the unit, i've got the plastic bezel off the front, but the plastic is glued to the flu if you know what i'm saying.

how's the best way to get it off?

As far as I can remember the plastic screen is attached with double-sided tape.
Use a thin blunt knife to prise it off gently working your way around the edge.
Before you replace the screen, block the hole where the flu light cable comes thru with a small blob of UHU White Tack (or Blutac). The flu light cable hole is a big source of dust.

I was just about to tell him that... but again, you have to remember that my technique only keeps dust out... it doesn't get it out if is already in... I really have to say the bathroom is the best place to get rid of dust but be careful... the light guide is FRAGILE and a broken light guide beats a few specks of dust as a problem.
