Does anyone here think it would be possible to have a PSX emulator running on the GP2X that will be able to do the more basic 2D games that don't have any 3D? I've been thinking about the megaman, castlevania, and other really good 2D games for the playstation, everyone is saying that because the GP2X doesn't have any 3D graphics hardware that it won't be able to do PSX full speed because it will have to do it all with software rendering.

So do any of you DEVS think it is possible to have playable, enjoyable 2D PSX emulation with sound once more is known about how to utilize both processors? I'm not saying will it be done anytime soon, just wondering if you all think it's possible. I know that even on Xbox there are still some 2D games that have troubles will low frame rate, but I think it was more because of Xport's lack of caring about finishing the emu, than the capablilities of the Xbox.

What do you think?

looks like a steep task. The PSX emu on the zodiac recently ground to a bit of a halt after looking very promising, however the devver of that emu (zodttd, i think) is or has got a gp2x so maybe he is concentrating on what he can achieve with this instead now...........fingers crossed.
Also, LDChen said he would look at porting a PSX emu to the GP2X as well.

So a little friendly rivalry from the two may result in something playable.

Not that I'm naysaying, I'd love to see it happen too but I need to jot down a few notes.

1. Clock Tower
2. Castle Keep
3. Catacombs

These areas share one thing in common. They all use somewhat rendered scenery. The Clock tower has them clouds, the castle keep does too. The Catacombs have an effect where you have 3D shadows behind eveyrone in the caves. They also have what I think to be 3 dimensional lava.

I just thought I'd add that in.

How about the ultimate in low-graphics PSX games - Vib Ribbon? Consists purely of fairly sparse line drawings onscreen, which change in response to whatever audio CD you put into the PSX after the game has loaded from its CD.

Hell, if we had a rough idea of the formulae used to analyse the music track and thus generate the levels, a remake should be pretty easy. Play an MP3/OGG file, look for certain patterns in the audio stream then draw a squiggly line for environment and stick figure for the character. Of course, I'm saying this from the viewpoint of Dilbert's Boss: that anything I don't understand must be easy...

(and no, I don't have time to learn to code it myself. Neither will I whine of no coder chooses to pick up the project - it'd be cool, but I won't loose any sleep over it)

This has come up before, let me address it to some degree even though I'm technically out of my depth:

2D graphics don't make things much easier, sadly. Processino power may be slightly less, but PSX doesn't really do 2D - it cheats. On the PSX, 2D games take place in 3D, but it's sort of klike they're television screens laid flat within the game. So you have to get 3D working to run 2D games. Makes no real sense, but oh well...

It's still easier than 3D, but not as cakey as SNES, which will still be quite a bit of work on the dev side.

It's like writing a 2D game in OpenGL or D3D9. There is no 2D it's 3D that is faked to look like 2D (Orthographic projection).

I don't think the GP2X has a chance of running Symphony, However, it should be more than possible to make your own Castlavania-alike. It's certainly something I've got in mind, but don't hold me to it. My ideas far outstrip my talent.

To throw the cat among the pigeons, what chance of a Turbo Grafx CD emu playing Dracula X: Rondo of Blood?

EDIT: Vib Ribbon would be ripe for a re-make, perhaps with the GP Penguin hopping about?

well if we're talking about PSX...I gotta say I for some reason would LOVE to play Loaded! on my gp2x!

With dual ARM200Mhz cores , I don't see why a good programmer couldn't do up a playable PSX emulator with it's relatively low speed cpu and leave plenty of power left over for the custom graphics and audio processors and do the 3-d polys in software rendering.

And I believe at least one open-source linux-based emulator that could possibly be ported.....:)

Pretty sure that PSX is about as 'current' a console as could be emulated.

N64 has a 90Mhz RISC cpu, too difficult to emulate and have anything left over to do the rest of the work, and Saturn emulation is not even doable at a decent state on high end PCs yet do to it's insane custom chip configs and limited information about the workings of them.

That's my feeling from several years on the fringe of emulation anyhow. :D

I for one would love to have SOTN on my GP2X, and without being as tech savvy as some, I am confident a decent PSX emu could be coded after the hardware has had time to be played with.

But until then Super Castlevania and Simons Quest will saite my hunger

:)

you really think so? i think we've more chance of decent GBA to be honest, and thats a lot newer... although a handheld not a console... and you think 2 x 200mhz CPU's and no hardware 3D is enough for good PSX? I highly doubt it... it takes some serious power to emulate a PSX, you still cant get perfect with a high-end PC... i certainly wouldnt think you'd get good PSX on a 400mhz P2 with onboard graphics... maybe ARM is a little more efficient, but I cant see us having amazingly good PSX...

I'm going to shit my pants the day Yabause reaches a decent state. Seriously, it will be a very happy day.

While I'm daydreaming, I'd also like a Linux/Unix port of Chankast, please. Preferably with source code available. Thanks.

Yeah I've been waiting forever to play my Saturn games again!
But I have never tried Yabause, on some other ones that barely even start up

I'm gonna go try Yabause now :)

satourne reaches pretty decent speeds on my 2800xp. I played NiGHTS through to the second level at about 60-70% speed. I imagine on a 3500xp64 you'd get much closer to full speed

Satourne doesn't have a Linux/Unix version last time I checked, which is why I'm waiting for Yabause. They seem to be the only people interested in Saturn emulation on platforms other than Windows.
