this has been a (minor) bother for a while: my pandora hangs for 30-40 sec at boot on "starting udev" It didn't used to (1.52) but on the current firmwre it does...is this normal?

For me it only did it on 1.54 (at 4 out of 5 boots). Since 1.55 I haven't seen a slow boot yet.

Off topic, but how do you update? Is it just sudo opkg update? or is it more involved

^the firmware, that is. From 1.54 to 1.55

what i found was if you removed the battery during any slow boot and rebooted it loads straight away usually a reflash to the latest img will sort this problem.

ok, I have done the upgrade from the system menu (I thought I was up to date, but apparently I wasn't  maybe because the previous time I tried I borked the system ;) ) seems to fix it, anyway..
