Flash did just enought to simplify the mess embedded players (Windows Media and Quicktime) caused.
It's really silly that both of these other players failed to provide an effective solution to the video on a webpage situation.
What annoyed me about embedded videos back then:

What annoyed me about embedded videos back then:
- No alternatives. You had to download an install either Quicktime or WMP (yay for vendor lock-in)
- Many sites did everything they could to prevent downloading the video file for offline viewing
- Very little options to control bandwidth usage, resuming broken video download (horrible with dial-up disconnects )
