They are basically a 3.7V Li-ion battery made as an equivalent to a 2xAA configuration for portable devices. Only 1300mAh, but the higher voltage (3.7V compared to 2.4V) and Li-ion cells should make them equivalent to good AA rechargable cells, and hopefully because they are made as a equivalent, it shouldn't need much, if any, hacking up of the console to get them to fit :)

The only thing that puts me off this particular one is that it's made by Uniross, which are normally crap, but there's plenty of other makes out there from different shops.

I have 1 of these for a digital camera and have just taken a look and it won't fit into the battery compartment of the GP2X as they have a slightly odd configuration and will only fit in cameras designed to take them.

I have my GP32 (not 2X) modded to run on rechargable CR-V3s. It doesn't outperform NiMH cells of equal mAh rating (mine's 1800mAh; I think 2000mAh+ is available now). Recharge time is about four hours; one battery+charger costs $30 or so.

Do you know the price of these compared to, say, Ansmann 2500mAhs?

I've done a price comparisonn in the UK:

A single CRV3 costs £6.29. Triple pack costs £18.50.
A single CRV3+charger costs £19.90

Four pack of Ansmann 2600mAh AA costs £11.90
Four pack of Ansmann 2600mAh AA + charger costs £41.80

I'm assuming you can get a cheaper charger for the Ansmann batteries, so they are probably still the ones to go for.

Alternatively, try lithium aa batteries http://www.battery-force.co.uk/show_AA_Batteries.html there. Not all of them by a long shot, but some at least.

Unfortunately, I've a strong suspicion they're non-rechareable. And since Lithium batteries typically have a tendency to explode when charged on the wrong curve, I've no intention of trying it out!

Lithium batteries are non-rechargeable. I posted a thread about some a while back because I saw some that were over 3000mAh. I was a little disappointed to find that I wouldn't be able to recharge these wonderbatts.
