256 MB SMCs?

I sent off the order for my GP32X a couple of hours ago, and now I'm just trying to prepare as best I can before it arrives... one of those preparations, obviously, is picking up an SMC. Now first of all, if I understood this correctly, I can't use a Compact Flash card (meaning that the one I've got already is useless), right? Secondly, even though I can't find anything about this on the official homepage or the page where I ordered my GP32X, I'm supposedly limited to 128 MB? I know the card has to be 3.3v, but has nobody found 3.3v cards that hold more than 128 MB? These rumors (scroll down) say different, but it might just be an internet hoax - anyone know for sure? I'd really like to be able to get at least 256 MB on there - anything less, and I think I'd find my games competing with my MP3s for space...

I am unsure about the 256 SMC cards, I have heard the rumours too but know of no one personally who has one.

Just buy several and be happy :)

I have 7 now :D

The thing behind the 256 SMC, is that it runs at 5v instead of 3.3v. The GP32 can only power a 3.3v card to begin with, and I don't think it has the programming to work with a 256MB SMC either.

in this article they mention this:

I also asked a few specific questions about the hardware, and discovered that the GP32 will indeed support larger Smart Media Cards, the system's software medium, as they are released. However the compatibility depends entirely on the manufacturer. According to Gamepark anything from Samsung Electronics should be fully functional with the GP32.

so it seems that if any smc that is 256MB arrives.. probably only the samsung ones will work?

lies, lies, lies, by gamepark most likely

the group that works with the SmartMedia spec was working towards an electrical specification at the end of 2002, I don't know if they decided on one I can't tell, 'cause I don't know. My local importer has talked to a few factories that build his devices, that they have no heard of a 256Meg SMC. 3.3v or 5v. Having said this, if GamePark can support more than more than 128M then it may seem likely that we could use an XD to SMC adaptor to get more than 128m or the thought of an adaptor that uses 2 SMCs, or a mod to put in a Compact flash socket and use CF instead of SMC.

SM used to be known as 'Solid state floppy disk'
