Finding Stuff In The New Forum Setup...

Now that the three GPH forums have been merged into one, it's suddenly become extremely difficult to find the relatively few bits of GP2X-specific info in amongst all the Caanoo stuff. For example, there's a recent GP2X-specific thread (posted before the merger) titled "New Ports?" As things...

    Newbie Questions...

Hello! Always nice to see a newcomer, as they're quite rare nowadays. Yes, if you have an F100, then firmware 4.1.0 is the latest official version -- and it does indeed support SDHC cards. You can try out Open2x DR7 if you like (it's in the archive) but only if you feel comfortable with flashing...

    New Ports?

Parkydr: Yeah, after I'd posted, I remembered reading about the old rating system. Unfortunately the lack of it means anyone sifting through the games is now working in the dark a bit. Farox: That's great news. I seem to remember it being a rock-hard game, though, so I may not get far enough in...

    New Ports?

There are certainly some excellent original games available (yours included) and it's frustrating that they're so little known. There are multiple reasons for that, of course -- not least that you can't rank games in a section of the archive by rating, rather than number of downloads or...

    New Ports?

As someone who wasn't around when the GP2X scene was at its height, maybe I can offer a slightly different perspective. I'll be honest, I bought my GP2X (from eBay) primarily as an emulation platform, and for that it's outstanding. It has more emulators available, for a wider range of machines...

    The Best F100 Homebrews?

What about Vektar? Ex-commercial game released as freeware a couple of years ago. Takes up 60 MB or so on your card, but a pretty good game if you like old-school shooters. Also, SuperTux -- basically a clone of Super Mario, but it's really well done.

I May Have Found A Site Still Selling New F200"s And Accessories.

You'd hope they wouldn't just be second-hand for €100 + p&p! Maybe if they had a warranty, but that doesn't seem to be very clear. Reasonable prices for the cable/cradle, though.

    Gp2X Game Reviews

Thanks for reminding me about the release of v0.5; I'll make a post about it in the next few days, and (judging on a very quick play) probably bump my review score up slightly. It does seem a bit more polished now. Anyway, here are a few more reviews: NetHack (CaduHack) -- 9 "...about as good...

    Nearly New Unit, No Input From Buttons/joystick. | Gp2X F100[B] Fw3.0.

Can't help on the problem I'm afraid, but you're a bit lonely on this thread, so hello!

    Gp2X Game Reviews

A few more reviews for your delight and delectation. As always, comments are very welcome, especially if I've made a mistake or missed anything. REWORD -- 8 "If you're a fan of word games and want something that will give the linguistic part of your mind a good workout, then this might well be...

    Gp2X Game Reviews

It's a little tricky to describe, but in essence: occasionally I felt that the cursor movement wasn't quite keeping up with my button-pressing. The delay was only very slight, but it was noticeable. (If you do update the program at some point, then of course I'll be happy to mention that. :) )

    Gp2X Game Reviews

Right; thanks for clearing those things up. I've added an extra paragraph to the end of the Chess2X review with the points you mentioned. :)

    Gp2X Game Reviews

Thanks, both of you. :) As far as chess goes, I remember even Colossus Chess in the 1980s being fairly strong, so it's no surprise that the far more powerful GP2X can be. :)

    Gp2X Game Reviews

Three more reviews for you, with links to the full assessment and overall score out of 10, as well as a brief extract from my thoughts: Chess2X -- 6 "This is v0.4, and in truth it sometimes feels like it ... I wasn't blown away by it" Castle of Dr. Malvado -- 7 "I'd prefer a less unforgiving...

    Gp2X Game Reviews

Thanks, Ziz. And sure, I'd be happy to review your games when they're ready. That goes for anyone else reading this, too: I accept requests! :D

    Gp2X Game Reviews

I know you can post reviews on the OpenHandHelds site, but you're restricted there to a line or two, and I felt like writing at rather more length. So, should anyone be interested, I've posted up a few reviews of GP2X games (downloaded from OHH) on my "2XGB" blog. The reviews are much too long...

    Beginner's Advice

laharl has given a better answer than I could about firmware (I'm still quite new to the console too) but I've never really been bothered by the SD-only restriction on (standard) F100s. I bought the Value Pack model, which has fw 3.0.0, and since I find the 20-ish second boot time acceptable I...

    Bbc Micro Emulation

Underrated game, that, though it always struck me as a bit weird to have a (male) wizard called Imogen! And of course, without Acorn there would have been no ARM, so the Beeb has its small part in the GP2X's ancestry as well... :)

    Bbc Micro Emulation

For anyone just wondering which of the four BBC Micro emulators in the archive to get: you want BeebEm v0.6, which has dealt well with everything I've thrown at it, from Snapper to (with the "nudge CRT" setting) Firetrack. Clearly it's nowhere near as full-featured as recent PC versions of...
