    Nintendo 3DS

Thanks for the recommendations! I was recently looking at Animal Crossing actually, it sounds relaxing and I like the idea of a single player persistent world game with lots of AI characters. Oh, is it still easy to put a custom firmware on devices you can buy in store today? That would add...

    Nintendo 3DS

Lately I've been thinking about getting an old-style 2DS. Not a fan of most colors and its weaker build quality, but it's got an ok price new, best ergonomics according to what I've read, and a decade of relatively modern quality games. Searching around on ebay though, even old DS games from 10...

GP32 FLU needs rewiring (and maybe more)

Look around on the file archive, search for "usb" to find drivers and stuff. I didn't try these since the mid-2000s on an XP computer, but hopefully they still work today on modern Windows :) GP32 64bit USB driver PC-Link file manager application, needs the driver first (you might need to run...

    She's dead Jim..

The last log block seems to hint at SD card issues (mmcblk0), what happens if you boot with no cards inserted? Or maybe something else was corrupted in the OS when the unit lost power, I'd try reflashing to rule out anything like that. Good luck!

Handmade 01 - Tiny gaming handheld project in progress

I wish more of these new homebrew handhelds focused on real usability instead of trying to be the ultimate keychain console. Even an extra half inch wider would make this one significantly more comfortable to play games on.

Good dumb mobile retro-gaming console? What do you use now?

I've been looking at Arduino stuff over the past year, these days I'm having fun tinkering with the Gamebuino META (there was a thread about it here). It runs on a Cortex M0+ at 48MHz with 32KB of RAM so it's spec'd for original games not emulation, but I'm sure there are at least a few people...

    Hurrican (Turrican clone) update

Pickle's back! :) Gotta try this one, thanks! By the way, any chance you could upload your Wolf4SDL port to the repo?

Pinebook Open-Source ARM based notebook (spectre safe)

Wow, I've been hoping to see computers like this appear for years! I remember a similar OMAP3-based convertible laptop around the time Pandora was being designed, but I didn't hear anything about that in almost a decade. Performance ought to be good enough for C coding and light desktop use...

Pandora Crosscompiler Toolchain Based On Openpandora.org Ipks

I ran the script today to try the arm-2013.11 toolchain. The OPKG archive link is stale, you need to update the wget address on line 267 from: http://opkg.googlecode.com/files/$OPKG_ARCHIVE to https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/opkg/$OPKG_ARCHIVE In...

    Gamebuino Meta

The 32KB RAM might be too little for how I currently do certain things, but the 32bit processor is promising and I'm doing some refactoring in preparation for trying a META port later. For perspective, the GP2X has about 1000 times the amount of user-accessible RAM, and the Pandora several times...

    Gamebuino Meta

The SDK is on GitHub, you just add those files to your Arduino user folder and the Arduino IDE picks everything up. For my game, I wrote a small wrapper lib that uses my own engine for non-Arduino builds, so I work with convenient native Linux builds except when testing on real hardware. This...

Injection mold case, the buttons are 3D printed but I really like their texture :)

    Gamebuino Meta

I got one of the early dev units and ported my work in progress space shooter :D Feels like a GP32 in Gameboy Micro format, fun stuff! Build quality is nice too, and the thickness and rounded sides make it comfortable to hold.

Beta Need for Speed II SE

Between Need for Speed II and StarCraft, Pandora is literally what my 10 year old self dreamed of :-) Thanks ptitSeb, gonna have to try this out soon!

    Gamebuino Meta

I for one am glad that there's new handhelds that carry its spirit but are completely aimed at homebrew, with contemporary tech and modern dev tools. Besides, if you wanted to get into Game Boy development on real hardware, you'd spend more money on the unit and a flash cartridge than on one of...

    Gamebuino Meta

This one looks really nice, like a GP32 in Game Boy Micro format. I wish it was a little larger for comfort though, but as I've learned with the Arduboy, being small and pocketable means I'll actually take it with me and use it on the go. Happy to see all these cool homebrew hardware projects...

    Update PicoDrive 1.92

Thanks for the update Notaz, Picodrive is probably my most used Pandora application. Just played some Chaos Engine on it a few hours ago actually :) I can do some basic Megadrive testing on GP2X F-200 and Caanoo if you decide to do a build for either.

    Release SuperZaxxon v1.76

I had a battery issue at some point last year, the meter was stuck at 0% while the unit was still running, or showed 100% after hours of use. I removed the battery and let it sit for a day, then charged it back to full. That seemed to fix it for the time being.

    SanDisk Ultra 400GB microSDXC card

There was a good discussion about this on Hacker News. Turns out these incredibly dense memory cards aren't as long lasting as smaller capacity ones that store fewer bits per flash cell. Looks like cards marketed for dash cam usage are the most reliable, which is what I'll personally look for...

    Ok, I gave in...

Nice work! When the Pi Zero came out I also wanted to make myself a custom handheld in a GBA case, a modern GP2X if you will, with a custom launcher menu and everything. I lost track of it since I couldn't find the Zero for sale anywhere at the time :) Seeing this rekindled my interest though...
