Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

I don't know if the 'decision' is wrong for me without knowing cost & battery impact. Please understand that is the purpose of this thread, to understand that information, not to agitate for more ram just because I would find it useful. I strongly believe that a significant number of potential...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

As mentioned earlier there is no 'holy war' from me for 4GB rather than 2GB, that's entirely in your head. Once again : All I'm saying is I'd like to make a choice about how much Ram I'd like to see in the Pyra based on my intended usage combined with information relating to cost & battery...

    One week with the Pyra

@EvilDragon : As the prototyping phase might be taking a little longer than expected, do you have any thoughts relating to the practicality / general worthiness of the suggestion made in this thread to improve the modularity & possibly add cooling options for Pyra?

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

It would be a great return on a fairly minimal investment to accurately examine the battery implications IMHO. We know that Pyra has 4 slots for Ram chips, depending on their size it should be fairly easy to make a prototype or two with different configurations of Ram. There would be no...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

What I would like to see is a rational argument that explains why it is better to make the decision without also knowing the cost / battery implications.....

    demonization of emulation

Thanks, reading it correctly it does indeed make sense :) What makes less sense is that there are plenty of people here who take more care than Nintendo when it comes to sourcing Roms, i.e. dumping/ripping original media rather than downloading via the interwebs. ;)

    demonization of emulation

Thanks Notaz, really interesting article. Particularly this bit : I think there is a typo and it should be : 'By far the most likely reason that header isn't an official Nintendo product'

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

This is not the case for image editing, from my experience with Photoshop (can't imagine gimp is any different) it is not overly processor intensive but very hungry for Ram when editing multi layer images and maintaining an edit history. I can see why the processor would be more important for...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

From earlier in this thread : Why would I want 4GB of ram? Image editing, Running VM's, Future proofing, Desktop replacement use, Ram intensive gaming, Running a Ramdisk, etc. NB Those are my personal reasons, I can think of some equally good reasons why other people might also want 4GB ...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

It depends what the potential customer wants to do with the device, if they would like to use their hand held mini PC for a tasks that requires a lot of Ram then this could be the deciding factor for some. My understanding is that with the Pyra the Marketing goal is to sell enough units to fund...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

The poll indicating that over 50% of users would be interested in more than 2GB was taken quite some time ago. There has never been an official announcement that Pyra would have 2GB. (that I've seen) Surely the only sensible way to decide what would be a persons desired amount of Ram would be...

What would you like to see?

Could you run a benchmark along the lines of crystalmark showing results for the various storage options for Pyra (eMMC, USB2, USB3, SD Card, Micro SD Card) this would let people know how much benefit they would get from eMMC compared to other storage options, thus, along with cost info, help...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

Why would it be necessary to change the board? From ED in the yummy thread : Each DRAM we have on the Pyra eats 200mW, and we got 4 Not sure how these could be filled, but 4 lots of 1GB seems possible. When there was a survey over half the respondents were interested in over 2GB. See...

The World's First 5.5 Inch Handheld PC/Gaming Console Based on Windows 10 System.

Not sure that's the reason, more like they fear the popularity of Apple & Android. There will come a time soon when for the vast majority of users there will be no need for a conventional desktop PC. Just plug your portable mini computer (or smartphone as some people call it now ;) ) into a...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

Thanks @WizardStan it's good to have some idea of what the actual battery impact of 2GB vs 4GB would be. Also from @Exophase in the it's yummy thread : Of course some real world tests & confirmation if a power saving mode that disables unused Ram is feasible would be nice.... What we really...

The World's First 5.5 Inch Handheld PC/Gaming Console Based on Windows 10 System.

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

Any idea what that means in terms of hours of 'normal' usage between charge? To test I guess you could see how long the battery lasts whilst benchmarking/playing video with a 2GB configuration compared to a 4GB configuration or extrapolate from a 2GB compared to a 1GB with power saving enabled...

Ram & eMMC costs / power drain

@EvilDragon : thought this might be worth a bump I know you're not quite at the actual mass ordering of parts stage but : Are we at a stage where a reasonable estimation of costs / power implications for Ram & eMMC can be given? I think it would be prudent to let people know the actual...

MJ Ubuntu Tablet campaign has started

They might even double their number of backers to er, 6 ;) From my perspective they could really make a go of this if they marketed it as the Linux equivalent of the MS Surface and made the default option include their 'type cover'.
